2004-05-24 08:59:00 | It would be best to reformat your computer if possible but if not then the Index.dat Suite (www.talkaboutshareware.com) program does a good job of removing the index.dat files. I am not sure about chat history but deleting all *.dbx fiiles will remove your emails from the computer. Another program that I have tried and found quite good is Super Utilities Pro (http://www.superlogix.net/). This program has a Super Shredder feature that can delete files securely. | tommy (2826) | |
2004-05-24 10:32:00 | It is really hard to rid everything out of your PC. There is always something left behind, like documents that were saved to wrong folder, and names in registry just to name a few. It is easier to undelete files also, but a hell of a lot harder after a format and reload. So really, the only real and safe method is to format and re-load windows. Just make sure you have all the drivers, especially any internal modems and the licence numbers.

2004-05-24 18:56:00 | Generaly people who buy second hand computers don't have the knowledge to find and open the hiden e-mail and backup files. Unless you have something realy private, don't worry about them. User.dat only contains details of your settings. If you want to delete it you can re-name it. Then reboot your comp to command line and delete the renamed file.

2004-05-24 22:22:00 | It's not paranoia. It is totally up to the persons situation, which you have no idea about. For example, I recently checked out a Laptop from a friend which had been "cleared out". Located several things (without using any undelete software) , amoungst them was a sensitive document concerning a deal in Singapore. Windows puts info all through the system, and for normal everyday users, who cares. But quite often, if used for business use, the situation can have more sensitive information on it. A neat program that will indicate some of the info recorded on your PC is Winspy (www.spychecker.com)

Run the application, which creates a bootable FDD, and then reboot the pc with the disk in . If you can recover data after running some of the different cleaning operations the disk provides youre doing pretty well . Warning, this program can destroy all data on your disk . Get the program from . east-tec . com/sanitizer/download . htm" target="_blank">www . east-tec . com :) |
