238873 2004-05-24 03:34:00 I have built a multimedia PC and want to connect the onboard 5.1 sound to my AV reciever. My reciever has one RCA input for each channel plus sub. However the PC outputs only on 3 3.5 jacks. To connect to my reciever do I need to use 3 3.5 stereo to 2 RCA cables. If so how do I know which RCA jack is centre speaker and which is sub? tkr001 (5681)

The simple answer is, yes, you will need 3 X 3.5 stereo jack to twin RCA cables. They are available at DSE.

Is there any documentation to say what is attached to the tip and barrel of the jacks? If so, do a continuity test and mark each RCA appropriately.

As for the centre versus the sub, if speech comes from the sub, and crashes from the centre, you know you have them switched!

Good luck.

238875 2004-05-24 05:36:00 Thanks. I figured I could get left and right OK by using white for left and red for right or vice versa. There is no documentation as to whether right of left or centre or sub comes from tip or barrel. tkr001 (5681)
238876 2004-05-24 06:16:00 Quick question, does your AV amp have a digital in? If so, then does your onboard sound have digital out capability?

Lo.

238877 2004-05-24 22:48:00 Yes my receiver has tons of optical and coax inputs. Unfortunately the motherboard I am using doesn't have any digital outputs. tkr001 (5681)
238878 2004-05-25 08:51:00 Oh really? How can your motherboard not have any digital outputs?

Lo.

238879 2004-05-26 00:32:00 Cos it doesn't. The line out, mic and speaker are analogue outputs. tkr001 (5681)
