238814 2004-05-23 22:26:00 yeh.........try superglue

no, seriously - please give a LOT more detail when you ask a question...say for example the operating system, the type of computer, etc, is it on dialup or jetstream or what ?.........otherwise you may as well be doing like this:

*man calls garage to tell them of his problem and expects help >>> 'my car wont go'...............

238815 2004-05-23 22:29:00 Hi pippajg

I presume this is on a dialup connection using a internal modem? A few questions:

How long does it stay connected? Some ISP's will disconnect after X amount of time if there has been no activity. Does this disconnection occur during the middle of some surfing?

Do you use an extension lead for the phone cord? If so, try removing it (move the PC closer to the phone jack temporarily)

Have you tried to call Telecom (phone 123) and have the line check for excessive background noise which can interfere with the connection.

238816 2004-05-23 22:51:00 Oops Sorry, thought you might be able to read my mind! LOL

He is in the UK so it is a bit hard to figure it out. He can get on the net, then it disconnects almost straight away, doesnt stay on long enough to download an email. They are on broadband, and it was ok, but started doing this.
I am just wanting a few ideas at this stage for him to try...he is not very computer savvy.
Just throw some ideas at me for him to try.
Thanks

238817 2004-05-23 23:01:00 get him to ring his ISP most have free helplines and will also tell him if theres a problem with their network and possibly they or the telecom outfit will be able to run a line check to see if theres any interference......otherwise make sure that the puter is plugged in ONLY by itself not with other stuff on that phone line to check if maybe the other device is causing probs (phone/fax whatever.......) drcspy (146)
238818 2004-05-23 23:07:00 Thanks for that... That was what I was going to tell him next, buthe just hates ringing his ISP as they have lots of foreign people on the helpdesk and they are hard to understand. But he may just have to ..or get my DIL to do it, she has more patience.

238820 2004-05-24 00:32:00 Yep done that, thought it was that to start with, but it is clear.
I actually think his hard drive needs reformatting as it is running very slow. He doesnt know enough to do it, so think he needs to put it into the shop.

238821 2004-05-24 00:36:00 as for slow running........very likely he's got spyware tell him to get adaware and scan with it

also has it been defragmented recently ?

238822 2004-05-24 00:43:00 Yep done all that...they were my first suggestions. I have contacted him and told him to contact his ISP, think they can help him more than I can from here. pippajg (5634)
