2013-12-19 22:31:00 | My son's system is in a bad way, and I can't figure out what to do, I can boot in all Safe modes, but when I try to restart in full mode I get 'starting windows'. And then the screen goes black and nothing happens, the monitor gives its 'power saving' message and nothing further happens. I tried to re install windows from disc and get a message about 'the unattended file contains an invalid product key' That is a new message to me and I am feeling out of my depth as to what to do next. I am currently running a system restore from the earliest restore point on the machine which was 10 days ago. There is no critical data on the machine and ideally I would like to do a fresh install of windows. The discs I have are upgrade discs, will they work or do I have to buy a full disc? 5 minutes later: Ok system restore can't boot it either.

2013-12-19 23:00:00 | if you wanted to completely reinstall Windows from Fresh, you can download the W7 ISO's for your version from techverse.net or technetwindows.blogspot.co.nz Then using the product key / COA on the Computer install, there should be a sticker with the Product key attached to it someplace. Of course you will need to download and install drivers from the manufactures site as well. What you can try before doing that is boot into safe mode with command Prompt, type in chkdsk /r <Press Enter>, press Y to agree, then reboot, let it do a system check. If its booting OK in safe mode its likely to be a driver or possible update related problem. 'the unattended file contains an invalid product key' If you have upgrade disc's then its looking for a older version of windows, and the productkey thats already embedded wont work on the current version installed. You can install from fresh with upgrade Disc's but theres a bit of mucking about, and usually involes having to do a "double install" unless you alter the ei.cfg file on the DVD, which means extracting its contents, or creating a ISO and removing the file, then reburning the DVD.:nerd: Geeky type stuff ;)

2013-12-20 00:25:00 | Had the same problem except I could get the front screen, but nothing would respond, all OK in any of the safe modes, so did a restore back to beginning of Dec, and all works now. Could it be the last MS issue of updates that caused this??????? | Arnie (6624) | |
2013-12-20 01:09:00 | Had the same problem except I could get the front screen, but nothing would respond, all OK in any of the safe modes, so did a restore back to beginning of Dec, and all works now. Could it be the last MS issue of updates that caused this??????? There is a few people having this problem, usually though it wont go into safe mode to run restore, had to repair several like this. Helps if you have the right bootable CD's, it does appear to be some updates, as every one has said the same thing, it was fine till the last lot of updates went in. | wainuitech (129) | |
2013-12-20 02:09:00 | I agree about the updates. I am just in the process of burning the W7IOS DVD That download took ages! Fingers crossed it will work. | EFFIGY (12530) | |
2013-12-20 03:33:00 | Ok now I have a boot disc, but I am coming up against the problem of the activation code and security key, which seem not to be accessible in safe mode command prompt. I used Belarc adviser to find them but now I am stuck again because I can't remove the old key. | EFFIGY (12530) | |
2013-12-20 03:54:00 | I'd like to learn how to do that extract from disc thing you mentioned ^^ | EFFIGY (12530) | |
2013-12-20 07:01:00 | I'd like to learn how to do that extract from disc thing you mentioned ^^ simple steps: 1. Make a folder someplace, lets say the desktop; 2. Go to code.kliu.org download the zipped folder called ei.cfg Removal Utility.zip Extract ALL the contents to the folder The ISO image you downloaded before, drop it into that folder as well. 3.Run the ei.cfg Remover.exe file - aim it at the ISO image you downloaded, and run it, you will get a message saying its removed the ei.cfg Burn the altered image to a DVD, when it boots it is now a universal W7 DVD that shows all versions, and will accept any type of key.(as long as its a actual key, you still have to activate it, and you can only use the version the key you have is meant for. Example you cant install ultimate and use a Home edition key.

2013-12-21 04:16:00 | I did exactly what you said, everything went well until I tried to re-install Windows using the new disc. The process started but then I get a pane named 'Install Windows' containing this message... The unattend answer file contains an invalid product key. Either remove the invalid key or provide a valid product key in the unattend answer file to proceed with Windows installation. In other words the same message as before. Stuck again.

2013-12-21 04:45:00 | I have followed all the instructions I could find on how to change the product key, but as I can only run in safe mode, in the Control Panel under System/Windows Activation it shows - Status Not Available and Product ID: Not Available. | EFFIGY (12530) | |
