2013-05-18 00:53:00 | How long do you think it would take a computer company tech to upgrade my computer from Vista to Windows 7. Would've had to download some drivers for 64 bit etc. ? :)

2013-05-18 00:59:00 | Maybe an hour max ... but Wainui could do it in 10 minutes ... :D | SP8's (9836) | |
2013-05-18 01:18:00 | Depends what it involves... If it's just a format and install, then install drivers and updates and nothing else (and assuming no strange problems were encountered) it should not take very long. But if there needed to be documents backed up\restored, programs reinstalled etc, it could take quite a bit longer.

2013-05-18 01:19:00 | Its not quite a simple question . A lot can depend on the availability drivers, depends on locating drivers, download speeds etc . Also depends on if its an upgrade or a fresh install . Often upgrades can take longer than a fresh install . If it were only a fresh install of Windows 7 from the DVD + installing drivers, As SP8's mentioned, roughly an hour give or take . If I were doing it from a image - 6 minutes to lay down the image + drivers install . Then depends on if all windows updates are run or not, that can easily sometimes take another hour . BUT does it also include transferring data, which would mean saving it first, then reinstalling programs, putting data back ? Often its things like that which will take the time, transferring data, alone can take a day easily depending on how much there is . Got a Vista PC here now, yesterday it took just on 4 1/2 hours to copy over their data before reinstalling . So add in another 4 1/2 to put it back = 9 hours . Most techs though wouldn't actually charge 9 hours as 99% of it is copy /paste = walk away and go do something else .

2013-05-18 01:29:00 | Just found out the friend got charged about $160. What's that about 2 hours work ? :)

2013-05-18 01:39:00 | Depends on the charge out rate. Some places will charge $130 / hour But that sounds about right for a real business, not someone doing it as a hobby. ( heard of higher charges from people)

2013-05-18 20:34:00 | Win7 doesn't really need a lot of drivers. Like Win8. Just installed Win7 64 bit on the other pc the other day. Only driver I installed were the wireless drivers. The other drivers are the default windows drivers. They're good enough. Then all I had to do was update it, which didn't take long | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2013-05-18 22:14:00 | Yeah 2 hours wouldn't surprise me, though I'm guessing they're charging for the time its sitting there on the workbench just chugging away installing (and the tech wouldn't have sat there watching it). $130 an hour seems a little over priced for that, but not completely unreasonable. 1 hour for a clean install seems more likely coz you can do the "Custom install" of 7 which will leave the data on the HDD, so no backup / restore required.

Depends on if the job is done correctly--- I do them daily almost so I know how long it takes . A install on a modern PC with a SSD will go a LOT faster than a low spec, normal HDD PC as well . What MANY people who say prices are to high seem to forget a real business may include internet usage, power etc . Just the other day I had to do close to 2GB of downloads for a customers install -- for some people that a sizable chunk of THEIR monthly usage . The Vista install I did the other day took just on 45 minutes to install, then another 1 hour to locate the correct drivers, it was a HP, so they can have several drivers for the same model, some work some don't . :angry Anyone doing an upgrade install from a vista is asking for problems as well . Seen it many times, do a upgrade from Vista, and its so-so -- do a fresh install and there's a noticeable difference . Windows then leaves a windows . old folder, ( which can be deleted) what "meant" to happen is all data/programs copy across -- sometimes doesn't work, so you have to wipe and start again . As for drivers -- I don't depend on Windows drivers, not if the manufactures have the correct ones . Take the Audio for example, windows ones work OKish as basic Drivers, but the full versions give more options . |
