From their Site today 14th Dec:

Email Issue - Webmail/Email Clients - updated @ 7:00 p.m

Some customers have experienced difficulties accessing Yahoo!/Xtra mail over the past few days. The issues were caused by a hardware problem at one of Yahoo's mail data centres. Yahoo have remedied the faulty hardware and are now working to fully restore all mail functionality.
At this time Yahoo!/Xtra mail access via webmail and third party clients is restored for all impacted customers:
- All customers affected are now able to access their Yahoo!/Xtra Mail accounts via webmail, and send and receive messages.
- Access via third party clients, such as Microsoft Outlook has been restored. Customers are now able to send and receive emails via mail clients.
- Access to mail via IMAP is currently not available. Yahoo have a fix underway, however we don’t have an ETA for resolution.
- New mail deliveries of emails sent out after service restoration is working without delays.
- There is still a backlog of new mail sent out before service restoration, that Yahoo are currently working to clear.
- Some customers may notice that older emails are not showing up in their Inbox. Yahoo are currently working to bring all accounts up to date, however an ETA is not currently available.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Please continue to check this page for further updates.

Email Issue - Unable to Access Yahoo! Xtra Mail - Updated @ 7:00 p.m.

Some customers may be experiencing problems accessing their Xtra mail. Some customers may also be prompted repeatedly for their user name and password. We recommend that you change your email password via the internet by accessing the following link www.telecom.co.nz/changepassword
We strongly advise you to set up a new and secure email password using the tips provided on choosing a new password.
Once you have set up the new password, you will have to validate it by logging into webmail first at http://webmail.xtra.co.nz and using your email address and new password to log in.
After this has been completed, email access should be restored.

In other words, just a typical outage that Xtra / Yahoo have these days -- Carry on as normal ;)
