1341480 2013-05-17 10:07:00 I have some icons for software on my desktop (along with crap loads of video files), but I still use the start menu for most of my programs. What you are basically saying is two things that describe MANY people and they are in the same boat with the exception of loads of videos on the desktop, which BTW will slow down your computer when first starting ;)

The two things:

1. Don't like change.
2. Don't know how to setup the new start screen to work to your advantage with the programs you use all the time.

When setting up a customers PC for the first time I actually sit down and talk to them, and help them to set it up and give instructions, 99% of the time when finished they cant see what all the fuss is about.

W8 - When setup to work with the regular programs a person may use all the time ( from the old style start menu), the W8 start screen leaves W7 and before dead in operations / Speed to open the programs.

I've proven it a few times , if you have to first open the start menu(w7) by either clicking start button or windows key, clicking on all programs or wait for it to self expand then scroll through a list of programs to find the one you want, then click to open it - it opens.

Windows 8 - hit the windows key single click on the tile and its open, takes half the time.

I did a back to back test with my son who will leave me for dead in speed and moving around windows, he's so damn fast the screens a blur sometimes with windows flying every where. We had a race to open FF. the Mrs said "go" I had FF open in W8 by the time he was scrolling.

While at the desktop, if a person has icons there, its no different to Windows 7, because it IS windows 7.
