1362753 2013-12-16 04:42:00 I know what you are all saying. We have all these great Smart devices so it's about restricing our usage. So we have these 4.7" phones and tablets so do we use WiFi at home and watch videos on a 4" screen .... Even if a family bought a $99 12GB data pack how long would that last if one is to utilise the Youtube app, the social media app .... And now two telco's have 4G are we ever going to really use phones as they were designed or are we just going to read the news, check the weather, use the GPS. The most expensive contract comes with 3.5GB a month right. Ex. the 2D $99 deal. Nomad (952)
1362754 2013-12-16 12:52:00 Yeah 4G is a bit of a joke with our current data caps, but the vast majority of people survive quite happily on 500MB a month and just restrict YouTube viewing etc until they're at home on WiFi. Whats up with the crusade? Chilling_Silence (9)
1362755 2013-12-16 18:15:00 I agree the pricing is high and hope that as more of it gets used it'll get cheaper, but like others I manage just fine on 500M a month, rarely even come close to using it in fact. I have Wi-Fi at home and work which covers the bulk of my usage anyway and I have a few free hotspots set-up as well. My main data use when roaming is for GPS navigation and I check the occasional E-mail, the rest of the time it's mainly in my pocket. dugimodo (138)

It annoys me b/c we are so behind. The resellers are more than happy to pump out these fancy devices every 12 months; and market them as such but practically they don't work out. While some fiends of mine can rely on 3/4G connection as their primary one which cost more than DSL/fiber it is still affordable. Not saying NZ needs to be like that at the moment but if one wanted to use more data it's still not an option b/c the plans "generally" caps out at 3.5GB. It's impossible to watch news clips or a tv show on demand while on the bus for eg .. with all these technology and how it is marketed.

Maybe it's providing the incentives to urge the customer to use more fixed line services and cellphone calling and those visitors on the road to use the hotel/motel services.

1362757 2013-12-17 00:37:00 I am on Telecom's Smart One Bill value pack which gives me 500 Gb per month. I rarely use more that 200 Gb per month. At home I connect to my desktop's modem through wi-fi. This allows me to download updates, applications or use the iphone to watch Utube. Away from home I occasionally access web pages or email but mostly I use it as a GPS. Bobh (5192)

move overseas to where they have better economies of scale and better geographies.

I really don't think its that bad now, prices and caps have improved a lot in the last year.

You have the population of Sydney spread out through a geographically diverse country like NZ, but we still have reasonably good coverage now.

Build your own cell phone network if you think its that easy and you're getting ripped off ;)

Yes of course I want things to be cheaper and have unlimited data, but I really don't think in the scheme of things for most normal users, things are not too bad. 2D rolling out 4G next year will shake things up even more.
