1362362 2013-12-13 00:35:00 HP have just brought out the Elitebook 840, which should be able to be specced to your needs, it's pretty light, has docking proper docking options and will have a 3 year onsite warranty. Alex B (15479)
1362363 2013-12-13 00:57:00 This sums up my needs best .

I realise that anything purchased today will be outdated before it even leaves the shop but surely having the latest specs today will extend the usable life at the other end . I'm wanting a good 2 - 3 years from this . The other alternative is to just buy a $1k laptop and keep buying a new one every year but I think that will be a nightmare managing software/files etc .

Its actually not that hard to transfer documents from an older laptop to a brand new one . Would agree the touch screen - at this stage its just buzz words and marketing and they are no use if you spend your day analyzing data on excel spreadsheets and copying email communications between departments .

I haven't heard anything great about Windows 8 or 8 . 1 other than the fact that it comes as standard with new PC Laptops . I have heard that the adoption rate is still fairly low since many corporates are only just moving on to Windows 7 if they haven't yet left Windows XP .

Vaio or Samsung should be fine . A $1000 laptop should be more than sufficient . :)

Off topic but you can enable 2 finger tap for right click.

One mouse button that is now touch and swipe capable, or if you prefer a "traditional" PC mouse then just go ahead and plug in an and you are good to go.

Previous versions of the Apple Mouse could easily do left and right clicks or mouse pad + keyboard shortcuts which is what I prefer.

Macs also do Windows ( usually better than Microsoft does) if you need Windows only software for something specific.

iWork (Pages, Keynote, Spreadsheet etc) also comes FREE with Macs as does the OS. Still waiting for Microsoft to respond to either of those offers ;-D

MS office will open and read iWork documents.

I believe you can also set clicks in areas of the trackpad to do things, so you could set bottom right to do a secondary click.

1362370 2013-12-13 08:50:00 I only know one person with touch screen and they say it's not worth it, bit of a nuisance.
Another has SST and loves it, although that might relate to what you need it for as a new conventional drive will still be fairly quick. He's deep in music and video
