When a friend signed up for Xtra earlier this year, around the time of yet another outage, the Telecom rep recommended they set up a gmail address :D |

When I moved to Telecom earlier this year I declined their @xtra email service.. in general , this is why...... Because we have been using our xtra email adress for the last 5 - 10 years. Its a major to shift after all that time Its a email address that matches our actual name. All the 'nice' email address's at gmail etc are long gone, you need to use something bizzare & hard to remember . Everyone we know has our xtra email as the contact & will not recognize email coming from another new address. Just notifying everyone of a new email address will certainly only get 75% updating their contact to our new email. We have subscriptions & logins at many many many webs sites that are bound to our xtra email address . I do agree that business's using xtra as an email address make them look cheap, PC Illiterate, behind the times & low tech . |

Not forgetting that it only needs doing once if you go with gmail or Hotmail. Agreed, all the 'easy' addresses are taken up. When I got my gmail address I added '.nz' to my first name but since then lots of other nzers have cottoned on to this. Maybe there are other little add-ons that will work, though. I think you will be surprised how many of your contacts will change to the new one when asked. Anyway, you will still monitor your xtra account so you can remind people who still use it. The web site registrations don't need changing in any hurry. But, in any event, it is not hard to change a few at a time. But, of course, keeping xtra as your main account is entirely your business. |

| 1362277 | 2013-12-13 02:35:00 | At one point many sites/services would not accept free web based E-mail addresses when requiring an E-mail for registration, this seems to have changed and I haven't come across it for a while but it used to be an issue. I have 2 old xtra E-mail addresses and a Gmail one, think I had a Hotmail too but I've forgotten it. I've been planning to fully migrate to Gmail for a while now but haven't gotten around to it. You may think changing E-mail is a trivial thing but I don't think so, not all that difficult but time consuming and involved. I have to track down all the various services I may have registered my e-mail account with and update them, some I use infrequently and could easily miss. for example there are Password reset E-mails for various online accounts Bank Logins Game Logins Websites like this one Contacts including those I may not even have on my list who only have my old addresses I have my E-mail client set up to check all 3 accounts and go through them to see what's coming from where but after 6 months I'm still finding things registered to my old xtra E-mail. I'm taking the long slow approach so it's no real drama but ditching an old E-mail doesn't exactly seem easy to me. |

| 1362278 | 2013-12-13 20:25:00 | We have been happy with Telecom/xtra for years without problems, but may be changing to Snap fibre early next year. They seem to have the best deal for us, but we will have to change our two standard corded phones to powered phones. The thing I am dreading is changing our email address from xtra to snap. Should hopefully be able to use the same name though. I assume that our xtra address will stop as soon as we change over, so all those who ignore address change notifications, or we forget to advise, will get their emails bounced back to them. |

If you are going to change email provider change to gmail or Hotmail. That way you won't have to change ever again. Not sure why you worry about using the same name (and you certainly can't rely on being able to duplicate it). Who actually relies on remembering email addresses? You start typing in the 'To' box and the targeted addresses pop up. And, yes, the people who don't bother to change your address will get bounces - this should be enough of a reminder. Get over the dread factor. Honestly you are overplaying it. But, like I said, change it to an ISP independent provider. As for the phones, you may well be able to use your old phones if you want. I am on fibre voip (Orcon) and I can run any type of phone to my modem/router. |

| 1362283 | 2013-12-14 08:29:00 | Are these outages localised? Seems to me that they must be, as I have been with Xtra forever and over the years I can only recall one outage of a few hours. I thought I had a log-in problem a few months back but that turned out to be me, not Xtra. What is the nature of the current issues? Cheers Billy 8-{) |
