Despite that I'm Esp surprised that no one informed the train crew given that a lot of people heard something dragging in the gravel, or that no crew picked it up though. By the sounds of it, the unit travelled for a while with one of the bogies hanging off that track, must have taken a little bit of force before it twisted and dug in. |

I remember reading a report on a train in Auckland that did that around Sylvia Park, it managed to rerail itself before something else went wrong :D |

No one actually got killed so that's a good thing. Bet theres going to be a few people worried not spotting something wrong during inspections, those tanks don't just fall off suddenly, something would have been going wrong for a while. |

The entire Ganz Mavag fleet (26 (!) two-car units) was immediately grounded for checks after the derailment. As far as I'm aware these checks are complete and the trains are back in service. |

Just as well too :) Theres a lot of people packed into them these days, had it been on the Upper Hutt-Wellington line there may have been more injuries, as the Mrs says when she's going to and from work the isles are packed. The post I made before - Just for some info :p -- many moons ago, I used to work at the Hutt Shops where we overhauled the Ganz fleet, a mate of mine who was known as pit-bull (short guy worked in the pits under them - boilermaker - his bark was worse than his bite ;) ) often got people to slip down and help align/secure various components - that's why I made the comment those tanks wouldn't have suddenly dropped, they are normally secured on very well (for obvious reasons). |

I'd be more worried about the possibility that the tank could have fallen off in the tunnel at 90km/h! |
