1340935 2013-05-13 02:18:00 That's a fantastic story. I'd sure as hell rather see positive things like that, as opposed to just handing out free money left, right and center to the people. Who cares if it costs $5,700 to keep somebody off a benefit, it pays for itself in a very short time indeed vs what the payout of ongoing benefit cheques would be.

And it gives them pride, commitment, something to live for. Win-win!

1340936 2013-05-13 03:17:00 I know somebody that went on the LSV course and was back on the unemployment benefit once they finished the course. And they're still on the benefit.

Obviously works for some people but not all.

1340937 2013-05-13 03:39:00 Yeah for sure, and even the story mentions that one of the ladies is back on the benefit... but it works for most AFAIK :) Chilling_Silence (9)
1340938 2013-05-13 03:45:00 Look at these people 5 years further down the track, most will have criminal convictions, unmarried kids, unemployed, smoking, doing drugs and have tattoos.
Its just about debating whether the expense for a handful that turn out ok is worth it.

LMAO, like smoking and tattoos is the be all of the hard knock school...

You do realise Prefect that 50 years ago, most men had tattoos and smoked!.....seriously dude, you are associating smoking and a few tats with criminal behaviour....sort yourself out mate!

1340940 2013-05-13 05:19:00 I guess it’s a start but I’d reintroduce Compulsory Military Training, not that there would be any intention to declare war on anyone. ;)

If you were gainfully employed and your boss requested you be excused you’d be excused. On the other hand if you were on the Dole then you’d be missing your playstation for a couple of months. :D

At least when they came out they’d have been introduced to personal hygiene and other life skills.

I await being flamed by our resident Hand-wringers and Bleeding Hearts.

I have to admitt I was worried when I saw that you had posted ;) but I hear what you're saying. The success of this course (which isn't compulsory) is really great. These are just 3 examples of the attendees and their achievements.

1340942 2013-05-13 05:51:00 Perhaps some sort of mandatory course for all people who've been on the benefit for more than XYZ months? :D Chilling_Silence (9)

1340944 2013-05-13 06:13:00 The LSV course will be something to put on one's resume. Courses like this teach teamwork and offer the type of challenges not offered in normal life. Getting up at 5:30 am will initially be a shock to the system for most of these trainees but it does not take long for them to get into a routine. Hopefully most of the trainees will finish the course with a more positive attitude. Bobh (5192)
