can't get windows updates

get error: "Windows update can not currently check for updates because the service is not running"

the service is running
have scanned for infection: clean
turned off the service, rebooted, turned service back on ~ still no updates
ran the Microsoft FixIt program 2x ~ couldn't fix it.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

1362437 2013-12-13 05:17:00 |wuauserv| is the service that needs to be running. zqwerty (97)
1362438 2013-12-13 05:41:00 The error it came up had nothing to do with a service or windowsupdate. According to most sites, the Intel rapid storage drivers were out of date. Updated them and windowsupdate worked. I've come across the same thing a few mths with someone else

Have no idea why WU would rely on Intel rapid storage drivers tho
