239740 2004-05-27 08:28:00 I am thinking of buying a new computer. I see Dick Smith sell Acer computers. These are cheap. But does anyone have any experience of them? Are they a reasonably good quality computer, or aren't they much good? ssssss (2100)
239741 2004-05-27 08:42:00 I bought an Acer Athlon 2600+ laptop last month. Great computer, but a little short on RAM with only 256mb, so I put another 512mb in and it really flies.
cheers

239742 2004-05-27 09:08:00 Acer are a good brand, but I would think twice about purchasing from Tricky Dickey ;) nz_liam (845)
239743 2004-05-27 09:20:00 Have you heard of bad experiences with Dick Smith? ssssss (2100)
239744 2004-05-27 09:29:00 No, but I know how their pricing structure works. I won’t go into details here, but get a second price on ANYTHING you buy from them :) nz_liam (845)
239745 2004-05-27 09:33:00 I have had an Acer laptop for 14 months and can award it 5 stars. But check whether the supplier can do on the site service as I had to have the mother board replaced, my fault, and it had to go back to Acer at Albany. It was away for 3 weeks. I increased my RAM to 512 MB.

Great machine. I have 2 printers, a scanner, an external sound system, a full size split keyboard and a 19 inch monitor running from it without any trouble what so ever. Any PC that can stand up to the abuse I give it has to be excellent.

Dumb Bell.

239746 2004-05-27 09:41:00 Dick Smith's maybe dearer, but their service and replacement policy is the best. My experience.
Bye

239747 2004-05-27 09:49:00 Yes, but in the case of an Acer laptop ALL service is handled by Acer Care NZ directly, so it doesn’t really matter where you purchase it, as long as you get a receipt. But I will agree that their over the counter replacement for most of their DSE/Digitor and other in house products is nice, also means you can "try before you buy" :D nz_liam (845)
239748 2004-05-27 10:32:00 Actually I am wanting a desktop, not a laptop.
What sort of 0800 line do they have for help requests, if any?

239749 2004-05-27 10:38:00 From memory 0800 Monday to Friday telephone support, I can find out tomorrow for you if you want, they usually come with a little support sticker on the bottom of the machine. What model were you looking at? nz_liam (845)
