240741 2004-06-01 02:54:00 Greetings,

Ive got a VHS Cassette here (Parents wedding anniversary) and Im wanting to save the moment onto DVD, mainly because we've only borrowed a Video Player from a friend and are wanting to get as many things on to DVD as possible.
We dont record TV Shows, so that's no problem.

Basically Im after a way of capturing the Video (Bought the Philips saa7134 chipset card from DSE) and then re-encoding it so it'll play as a normal DVD would (Menus arent neccesary).

Ive had a Google for a bit of software and some looks good, but I'd rather get recommendations before I spend time downloading and filling my PC with crap software ;-)

OS = Win98SE, WinXP, and Xandros (Xandros for re-encoding only because Ive not setup the kernel modules for the Tuner Card).

Many thanks

Chill.

240743 2004-06-01 05:17:00 I assume you don't want to spend too much. If you're not afraid of spending money, the Plextor ConvertX I looked at for June PCW is really good. Costs $445 though, so you wouldn't want it for just one job .... Biggles (121)
240744 2004-06-01 05:20:00 What exactly happens to this gear after you have finished reviewing it?

just curious....

240745 2004-06-01 05:22:00 All hardware, alas, goes back to the vendor. Software we keep. Biggles (121)
240746 2004-06-01 05:24:00 .... it's actually published in the mag under "Reviews Policy" (in the side bar with contacts and what not, in the Mailbox section). Biggles (121)
240747 2004-06-01 05:27:00 Oh . . . . . . I had a vision of the PCWorld staff sitting atop a huge pile of gear acumulated over the last 20 years . . . . . . . Piles of laptops,Top of the line gaming rigs and office systems,scanners,printers . . .

Robo's pile would have to be a fair bit smaller,Would take thousands of PDA's and mobile phones to make a pile big enough to sit on . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . HA

240748 2004-06-01 05:31:00 I wish ;) Unfortunately, not in this reality ... Biggles (121)
240749 2004-06-01 05:38:00 Unfortunately, Im not in a position to make large software purchases,
I probably should have mentioned that in my first post...

Preferrably something very low-cost, or Open-Source would be good :-)
