240612 2004-05-31 08:02:00 I run Windows ME and everytime I start-up I can only see my screen saver and an error message:

"error in shwlapi.dll"

and can not go any further.
No mouse, no toolbars, no icons

Any ideas how I get around this?
Any help much appreciated.

240613 2004-05-31 08:40:00 Hi Todd

Is that supposed to read shlwapi.dll? Is that the full error message? Have you made any software changes just before this started to happen? Errors in shlwapi.dll could mean a few different things, depending upon the rest of the error message :)

Can you get into Safe Mode? Keep pushing F8 when the computer starts booting until you get a startup list and then select Safe Mode.

Yes you are right - it is shlwapi.dll

Full error message reads

"Explorer has caused an error in SHLWAPI.DLL"
"Explorer will now close"

I have tried starting in safe mode and doing a step by step start-up but still the same result.

After start-up all I can see is my Screen Saver, so when I CTRL - ALT - DEL it indicates that nothing is running.

It has got me stumped.
Any help appreciated
Cheers Todd

240615 2004-06-01 07:27:00 Hi Todd,

Have you got your Windows ME CD handy and a startup floppy boot disk? You could try running scanreg.exe off the ME startup floppy disk and see whether it detects any problems. A description of the process can be found here (support.microsoft.com). If you don't have a ME startup boot disk you can download one from here (www.bootdisk.com).

Failing all this, and if no further advice is forthcoming, you may need to reinstall Windows over the top of your current installation. Do not choose reformat, rather the repair option instead (can't remember the exact list of options available with ME - someone else might be able to help out here). This will reinstall the OS files and leave your files as they are. You will need to download all the Windows Updates again though.

Or you can apply for the free Microsoft Updates CD (www.microsoft.com) which will install all updates available until October 2003. A good timesaver.
