240777 2004-06-01 04:12:00 I have Pentium 2 with 48Mb Ram. I reformatted HD and tried to install clean Win98 from CD. Started PC, inserted CD and got a prompt C:\>. In previous attempts after inserting CD installation started, but now it waiting for Command. Any ideas? Thanks for help. Taly (4598)
240778 2004-06-01 04:15:00 What happens if you type in:
d: <enter>
?
Can it see the CD?

From there you could find the setup.exe program and get it started.

240779 2004-06-01 04:35:00 Im assuming you've booted from a Boot Floppy. If not, you need to so you'll have CD-Rom support.

From there, your CD-Rom drive will become E: (Most likely) because a temporary RamDrive will be D:

Try booting from a Boot Floppy and typing:
E:
dir

See if theres anything there.

Then, click on FAQ's here at PressF1 and follow the brilliant FAQ that Heather P wrote!

240780 2004-06-01 07:03:00 When I typed D: and pressed Enter I got D:\>.
But I also tried to boot from CD-rom selecting boot sequence through BIOS, the result was:
"Start up from CD-ROM..... failed"
By the way, usualy if there is CDROM in, the CD drive lamp blinks. It don't now. Can it be that CD drive failed?

240781 2004-06-01 07:28:00 If you enter DIR at the D:> , can you see a win98 <dir> ?

Or you can get a win98 bootdisk from here (www.bootdisk.com) (the OEM version). Once the file is downloaded, put a floppy in your A drive and double-click the downloaded file. It will make a bootdisk for you.
Next, change your BIOS to start from A drive , put your bootdisk in the drive and start your computer. You will be faced with a menu, choose the one with CD support. Note when it is finishing, what letter it say's it gave to the CDROM drive. Then just enter.. (substitute E with whatever the letter was that was allocated to CDROM if different)
E:
cd win98
setup

Do as Pheonix says, download a win98 bootdisk with CDROM support and make sure it has FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM on it.
Use this to start again to wipe the slate clean with a new primary active dos partition and format it.

Make a directory win98 on the C: drive, copy the contents of the win98 directory on the CD to the win98 directory on C:

Change the prompt to c:\win98 and type setup.

Win98 will then install from the hard drive, much better than doing it from the CD.

This assumes your CD drive is actually working Ok.
