241190 2004-06-02 10:54:00 Looking for a new laptop around $3000 to $5000

Preferably towards $3000, but more if wanted.

Want it to be fast and stable, and last for over 3 years or something. Doing some rendering with AGI, but mostly just for word, email, ACT, etc.

About the only game will be Age of Empires 2, and it needs to handle it well enough to run over a network, without slowing the other computers down.

Does anyone have reccomendations?

Also, could you give me some links to good laptop reviews?

Thanks

241191 2004-06-02 11:50:00 Any laptop in that price range and cheaper will do what you want, after you go over a certain price bracket your paying for size(less weight the more expensive),screen quality and advanced battery life.

I just purchased an ASUS A2500D for my personal use,...meh heh heh.

mmmm.....9600pro in a laptop.......

Send me an email if you want a little chat about the Asus range.....]:)

241192 2004-06-02 12:37:00 I can recomend the ECS range of Laptops.
I have sold quite a few with no problems.
You will want something with a P4 3ghz + and a decent video card
for rendering, ATI M10 or ATI 9700+ 128 mb ram.
Price range is $2500 to $3000 and 2 year warranty
They also do a laptop with a 17" TFT WXGA screen which might be quite good for games and rendering.

241193 2004-06-02 21:29:00 Obviously mejobloggs is looking for a quality laptop if he is willing to go up to the $5k mark. So why would he buy a P4 3 Ghz when he could get a Centrino in that price range which performs just as well and gives far superior battery life + you get WIFI. Really the Pentium M chip is far superior in laptops (being specifically designed for them). IMO if you are buying a laptop in that price range you should look at Centrino based units. Besides if you want the laptop to last 3 years or so why would you buy an already surpassed chip. Sb0h (3744)
241194 2004-06-02 22:41:00 Well that all depends on how he is intending to use the laptop,Is it worth an extra $1000 odd dollars to shave off half a kilo of weight,or to get an extra hour of battery llife?

To me no chance, but to others I'm sure that would make or break a sale.

241195 2004-06-02 23:09:00 Heh, sorry about this. My Dad asks me to find out about laptops, so I start asking questions, and looking everywhere, and suddenly he makes his mind up overnight.

Looks like we are getting a Toshiba M30, 1.6ghz centino. The only problem I have with that, is that it only has a 32mb Geforce FX 5200.

Now, our old laptop with 300mhz, and no graphics card can do the rendering, but it just takes about 3 times longer than on the desktop.

Would a 32mb graphics card disadvantage us that much?

241197 2004-06-02 23:40:00 That graphics card isn't gonna help your gaming - even AOE2 would like a bit more than that - if you're spending $3K then you should expect a lot more! Greg S (201)
241198 2004-06-02 23:44:00 hmmm...yes and no,AOE will play fine, and the item has an expensive screen,a dvd writer and the more advanced cpu.

I can see it costing 3 grand.

241199 2004-06-02 23:59:00 Alrighty,i just read the review on the notebook.

It will esily do everything you have specified, the only issue raised was the heat of the touchpad.

So,all said and done,it will do as required,But if one was to make an informed purchase they they certainly could do better for the money.
