241188 2004-06-02 11:14:00 hey all, im trying to fix a laptop belonging to a girl i work with and im stumped

acer travelmate laptop
cpu: 1.8gHz
ram: 256mb
3d: nvidia geforce 2

trying to play a divx video. however it only plays for 5 - 10 minutes before entering a loop, repeating about 1 - 12 seconds of video.

since its an older 3d card (gf2) i installed the detonator drivers v45.33, this got me playing 10 - 15 minutes of footage before the loop occoured. (5 minutes gain on a 2 hour video... progress!

the laptop is running windows media player v8.00.00.4487 which im going to update tomorrow to 9.whatever to see if that gets me anywhere...

there is a dvd rom drive in the laptop, and it plays dvd and vcd sweet as, its just the divx...

ive installed the gordian knot video codec pack (godsend) and run adaware to get rid of the bundled **** that comes with it.
this has worked sweet on my own computer, but her laptop just hates me.

any of you gurus out there have any clues?

all assistance appreaciated
ciao

241189 2004-06-02 12:52:00 Does this divx file play properly on another computer? If not it may be a dud/fake or corrupted in some way.

If it does play fine on another computer then you may have codec issues. Installing codec packs is not recommended as it can cause conflicts. Usually you are better off installing say FFDShow and just using that. That won't corrupt other codecs in your system bacause it uses its own playback filters. First port of call, uninstall any codecs/packs you do have and try that. WMP 9 codecs may help as well.

Your current system is definitely good enough to play back a divx file. Maybe your hard drive or whatever is struggling to seek and read the data? Try some slightly newer video drivers ie 53.xx.
