241085 2004-06-02 03:19:00 I have been experiencing an irritating problem withM/S Word 2000.
When I try to rename a document by using "Save As" the Screen locks -up and the Word Header aqt the top of the screen starts flashing, the only way out of the problem is to select LOG OFF with CTL ALT DELETE, an error message then occurs, which allows one to shut down Word, then cancel the Log off and back to normal.
I use a number of templates for letterheads, Invoices and Statements, and at present the only way I can use the is copy and paste rather than a simple "Save As"
Any suggestioins to sort the problem would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken Smith

241086 2004-06-02 03:51:00 Hi Ken

I don't know the answer but I have recently begun to experience a similar effect if I try to open a Word attachment direct from an email, or sometimes when I try to "save as" an email attchment.

I am also using Word 2000 and my OS is Win 2K. If I leave it the flashing eventually stops and I can usually go on normally from there. I first noticed the problem a few months back on my W98 box (also Word 2000) and I put it down to a lack of processing power.

Until your post I was beginning to think that a later version of Word was the culprit.

Cheers

241087 2004-06-02 04:13:00 The usual fix for when Word starts misbehaving is to do a search for the file or files normal.dot and with Word closed rename it/them to normal.old. Reopen Word and see if your problem is fixed. tommy (2826)
241088 2004-06-06 02:38:00 Thanks for your suggestion Tommy,
Tried renaming normal.dot as normal.old and re-opening word, unfortunately the problem remains and unlike in Billy T example Word stays locked up.
Any further ideas please.
Ken

241089 2004-06-06 03:36:00 What is the exact error message that you are given?

It is possible that you may need to uninstall Word and reinstall. You can move or copy your templates to another temporary folder away from the Word folder and put them back afterwards.

First though, you might like to create new templates from a copy and paste of the current ones, save them as new names and delete the originals in case they are corrupt.

241090 2004-06-06 05:27:00 Thank you Susan,
When one trys to re-name the document, and it is any document, not just templates, the top title bar of the screen commences flashing and the screen locks up.
By selecting CTL Alt Delete, The message comes up
" You cannot close microsoft word because a dialog is active.
Switch to Microsoft Word first to close the Dialog."
Word will then close normally.
All other aspects of Word appear to be operating normally.
Thanks, Ken Smith

241091 2004-06-06 05:40:00 Have you tried "Detect and Repair" via any Office program Help Menu?
Vallis.

241092 2004-06-06 05:42:00 Also make sure you have applied the Service Packs for Office 2000. Now up to SP3, they are quite large in size.

Its possible that they may become "required" as Windows becomes updated over time.

Minimize Word and you may find the dialog box has come up behind instead of infront of word.
