241074 2004-06-02 02:12:00 Hi guys,

Ok I am going to upgrade my CPU from a Celeron 2.4ghz to a P4 2.8Ghz chip.

My question is what sort of repercussions are there with regard to Windows XP Home and the activaton process... will I be prompted for a re-activation once the new CPU is installed. Obviosly I'll need to give them my Product key.. will this be done on-line or will I have to actually ring Microsoft customer support?

cheers

241075 2004-06-02 02:24:00 You should just be able to re-activate over the net, should it prompt you.

If you've activated a few times, then you may have to just ring MS and talk to them over the phone, they're usually very friendly :-)

Chill.

241076 2004-06-02 02:27:00 In my experience with XP installs ( 4 so far), is that it will activate on the net, painlessly and quickly.

On one install the product code came up invalid (said had been used before?!), so online it tries to give you a new code, and that failed too so I had to ring them - it gives you a NZ 0800 number. The person was friendly and gave me a new activation code, no hard questions asked.

Certainly not the hassle we all thought it would be when they brought out activation.

241077 2004-06-02 02:39:00 uh...............You shoudn't need to reactivate anything,XP lets a certain amount of hardware change and im pretty positive a cpu upgrade won't cause any bells and whistles to go off. metla (154)
241078 2004-06-02 02:42:00 I pulled my network card, rebooted and it wanted to reactivate. It's twice I've had to do it - once for the network card and once for a reinstall. jaxson (3204)
241079 2004-06-02 10:58:00 I have done numerous CPU or m/b upgrades with XP - everytime XP would not boot up - big blue screen & error messages. In most cases you have to reinstall XP as well as re-activate. xtraka (1984)
241080 2004-06-02 11:02:00 For just a CPU Upgrade, in most cases you shouldnt.... Chilling_Silence (9)
241081 2004-06-03 00:35:00 My experience has been that if you are just upgrading the chip (same m/b, hard disk), it should not require a reinstall of XP.

Just remember to ensure that the BIOS setup is changed immediately after installation and during the first bootup, as that may cause conflicts with XP. You may need to change the firmware for the m/b as well as P4's operate slightly differently from Celerons on certain m/b. Great to RTFM of the m/b first.

Hope this helps

Cheers (onto the second drink now....
