242004 2004-06-05 05:13:00 Hi some time ago my monitor colour settings got fiddled with and I lost the original settings.

Anyway the colours etc on the screen are really dark and playing games always results in having to increase the gamma etc to see anything, whereas on the other computer with a new monitor no adjustments like that are required.

There is no 'reset to factory defaults' button either so I've lost the original settings. I just want it back to factory defaults so the colours are correct.

My monitor is a PC Company (Likom?) 17inch one.

I was wondering if anyone else has the same monitor could they push the buttons on the monitor itself and tell me the colour settings for the menus below: (My current settings have a question mark beside them)

Colour Temp:
6500 / 9300 / or User ?

Red Gain:
79 ?

Blue Gain:
83 ?

Green Gain:
73 ?

H-Moire:
44 ?

V-Moire:
44 ?

V-Focus:
66 ?

H-Focus:
80 ?

Contrast:
97 ?

Brightness:
100 ?

242005 2004-06-05 05:41:00 Hi,
First, check the connectors for straight pins and firm seating.
You could try to set the colour temp to 9300, but from a glance at the other settings, it appears your monitor is getting a little tired.

242006 2004-06-05 05:47:00 I have 3 PC Co monitors all Likom and all have different settings. The adjustments are there to set it up to how you like it. Start by setting all the colour settings to 50. If you find for instance that its a bit to much red then reduce the red or increase the blue & green untill it gets to where you like it. I suggest using a wallpaper that has a suitable range of colours including black & white. Good luck i-gordon (962)

I have a monitor here which is a Likon L7034LD 17" CRT (check the label on the rear of the monitor for model number)

Seeing as some of my options look at bit different to yours, I suspect your monitor is different. Perhaps just try out the colours and contrast/brightness settings to start with. My monitor is about 3 years old now, and I find it a bit 'dim' anyway, especially having it right next to a 17" LCD

Yes we seem to have the same model number :)

Your settings do appear quite dull in comparison (colours a bit washed out), are you sure those are defaults, like no-ones changed them?

Its really hard to know which is the "correct" colour. When looking at a photo on the computer, how do you know what the colours are really supposed to be. Must be even worse for like graphics designers etc trying to get the colours just right so they look the same on any computer.

Post some more settings :D

242009 2004-06-05 08:05:00 Trying to compare user settings is virtually a meaningless exercise, as monitors will be different, as will people be different. Just set the colours as you prefer them.

If the colours remain dim when wound right up, then the monitor is due for replacement.

See if you can find some colour test patterns to down load, there are several on the net, but cant give you all the urls right now.

The is a great oldie at simtel.net in the vga archives of msdos here (ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/vga/svgat350.zip)

The file is svgat350.zip.

It is a dos program called mono.exe when unzipped, it generates a Philips type TV test pattern. It should work also from a dos window.

Then there is a program called monitors.exe, and there is a Nokia program, these give test patterns and enable a monitor to be set up.

Set to 1024 X 768 when Flight Simulator was installed.
According to my handbook if you go to RECALL you will get the factory default setting. This is the setting at bottom right , a diamond with a left pointing arrow.

OK, confession time :p ... yes, I have been fiddling somewhat with my settings. The monitor is getting older so I have tried to compensate with tweaking the constrast/brightness values some-what, but the colours have been left alone (pretty sure I didn't touch those). I found that 'whites' were appearing more duller so I changed the contrast/brightness settings. I have read that if you have the brightness up really high (near 100%), it actually shortens the life-span of the monitor, so I have settled on a compromise with the brightness/contrast ratio.

>According to my handbook if you go to RECALL you will get the factory default setting. This is the setting at bottom right , a diamond with a left pointing arrow.

Out of interest, I hit the Recall button .... I now have a smaller screen with quite a bit of black space around the sides (1024x768). My H-size was halved, and the V-size was reduced by a third. Brightness is now 80, was 86, and contrast remained the same. The colours have not changed either.

As already mentioned, each monitor will be different. Just fiddle with the settings until you get the best result. I also had to adjust the gamma settings within games so as to not stumble around in the dark. This monitor is attached to a secondary PC so it doesn't bother me that much, and I have it looking the best it can now.

Perhaps time to start putting the pennies aside for a new monitor :)

242012 2004-06-05 12:04:00 Yes thanks Jen it looks like shelling out some real cash for a good monitor one day. Waiting for LCDs to get sub 15ms refresh rates. ;)

I guess I can live with this for the mean time. Yes the recall button doesn't do anything useful like a full factory reset would.

Thanks all for the help :)

You may like to try this little screen test program from Nokia (freepctech.com) to get your settings right.
If you are really serious about getting the settings right for photo editing, you will have to do a lot of fiddling. First, adjust your picture with the Nokia program, then get a good portrait both from your printer and a screen picture with flesh tones in about the centre, and hold the print in the room near your monitor. Adjust the settings untill the screen and the photo match.( You will not get very close with a low end monitor, even if you use some advanced software such as the Adobe screen calibrator)
