241808 2004-06-04 23:07:00 Good morning all

I noticed this message last night while booting up:

"Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot open volume for direct access.
Windows has finished checking the disk."

My operating system is Windows 2000 Professional - should I worry, and most of all should I do anything? ?:|

Many thanks
R.M.

241809 2004-06-05 00:21:00 Its not going to cause a problem, and some future update will likely fix it.

Microsoft say:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

241811 2004-06-30 08:01:00 Further to the above messages/problems - lately I have been having trouble booting up (in the morning, and when getting home from work) . The first attempt gives the error message:
"Primary Master Drive failing" . I think the cold may have something to do with this, and a second attempt is just fine .

However - back to my first problem, I can no longer check my C drive, something I do each month . I get the message as described above .

What can I do to remedy this? I am still able to check my D drive, but feel nervous not being able to keep an eye on the C drive .

Thanks in anticipation of all the good advice!

:)

241812 2004-06-30 08:08:00 "Primary Master Drive failing" should be taken seriously.

The drive is about to fail, and you should immediately back-up anything that you want to keep.
It might run for an hour, a day, a week or a few months in this mode, but assume it will fail imminently and save everything you value.

241813 2004-06-30 08:28:00 I do take it seriously, and have dutifully backed-up what I think is appropriate X 2, in places!

The other comment I would make, is this drive is a Maxtor 60GB, 7200 RPM. I bought the first one from Dick Smith at Christmas 2002, it failed in February 2003, and was replaced (by the same model drive) free by the manufacturer's agent in Auckland. So this particular Hard drive is only 16 months old. That I'm feeling pretty sad about!

241814 2004-06-30 08:35:00 Unfortunately the longevity of HDD's is matching the low price. They have become quite cheap, but do not last. I have lost 4 in total over 4 years (2 in one PC and 1 in each of 2 other PC's).

You are very wise in heeding the warning and backing up.

My last HDD was a Western Digital from DSE, as I thought I would spread the risk by having diverse brands. Now have IBM, Maxtor, Seagate and WD in use. The WD was quite well priced from DSE and so far seems fine.

I have a total of 12 HDD in all here.

241815 2004-06-30 08:39:00 >this drive is a Maxtor 60GB

Maxtor has a drive diagnostic tool which will confirm the impending death of your drive. You can download it from here (www.maxtor.com). Just follow the instructions given on that site to make the boot floppy. At the bottom of the page is a link to a PDF document which gives full user instructions and PowerMax options.

I take it the drive is now out of warranty?

241816 2004-06-30 08:49:00 I used that diagnostic tool - and was told there was no problem found .

Now, as to the warrenty - I haven't investigated that, but would suspect that you are right!
