242591 2004-06-07 09:14:00 One of the serveral PCs in our house is a Celeron 400 dual boot Win98 and RH9 system. Xwindows on this system seems a little fragile - it is fine when it is going but unexplainedly dies. The first time this happened I eventually just reinstalled and all was well again until recently.

Now when you try to load Xwindows, the monitor effectlively turns itself off - the light on the front goes from green to yellow. An attempt to run redhat-config-xfree86 ends up with the same effect. If the tool is having difficulties, it should either load a minimal Xwindows or drop you back to the command shell.

I must admit I have just changed the monitor to a newer one - quite capable of running at 1024x768. Anyway, the above config tool should reset this.

I know I should probably go and look at the video config file - but last time I made no change to the system and the same mishap happened.

Video is onboard INTEL 82810-DC100.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this to happen seemingly by itself?

242592 2004-06-07 11:49:00 Strange. Perhaps the monitor is not being detected correctly and the wrong frequency and sync are being used which is triggering the monitor to switch off?

Can you get into runlevel 3 OK? Open up a text editor and check out what XF86Config has for your monitor against the settings given in the monitor's manual.

242593 2004-06-08 08:44:00 A good lesson in fault finding here! - don't assume a previous fault is the same as the current one . A quick look on the web for the monitor specs then a look at XF86Config showed out of range horizontal frequency range .

Thanks Jen!

However I can't see why redhat-config-xfree86 didn't reset this when run .
