hmmmm, I wonder how well this would work?

243013 2004-06-09 05:00:00 we already have enough security in place, whats needed is education of users, otherwise the computer will be dumbed down so even the stupids can't break it,and then they won't be worth owning. metla (154)
243014 2004-06-09 05:02:00 i think the NX bit is a good idea , it has been around for about a year and MS has been saying good things about it since day one.

the big thing in that artical is that redhat are getting support for it too.

some say its a way to stop all virus code.....
some say its just a back stop for bad programmers....

either way if every computer had it, it would have meant that blaster worm could not have happened.

243015 2004-06-09 05:13:00 There has been another PF1 discussion recently on NX . I wont regurgitate all that was said there .

Except

> MS has been saying good things about it since day one .

Of course they have . They're a driving force re NX . I agree also that it can be a gaurd for bad programming (add some cruft to the CPU instead of the OS, yay) .

Why the hell Linux needs it with it's natively strong security, etc, is beyond me unless it has more to do with RH being a soley commercial product now, ie, the same suspected reasons as MS has for pushing this barrow and that IMO has nothing to do with yours or my security .

Firmware security does not belong in the CPU .

243016 2004-06-09 05:17:00 Microsoft will still suffer from viruses IMO.

Goto Google news and search for "Linux", you'll find:

searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com

Of course in Linux, most users only have access to /home/username, so if I were to write a bash script, there's not much damage I can do that cant be fixed without a good backup setup.

In Windows however, I can write a little .bat file that will kill off half my OS and render it useless in a matter of seconds.

There are Buffer Overflow issues in Linux obviously, however they dont seem to be as numerous, nor as severe.

I dont know much about it, but its not an all-in-one solution, so there are still going to be Viruses, Im sure....

this is true, but it could also be said that MS should never code a un-checked buffer........

Also true. Mistakes happen I guess, it's often the supposedly little ones that bite the hardest. They must have a really good breeding programme for them ;). I wonder if we got them in on the kakapo or kiwi programs they could do some good with those populations or would it be better to let them loose on the rats and stoats to see their true worth??

PS. We'll have to anticpate the flood of extra members requiring assistance.
