242881 2004-06-08 21:46:00 Hello all

I have an idea for a PC-related product. Nothing flash or fancy, but something I feel would be usable and popular.
Anyway my problem is where to start: patents, design, manufacture, capital etc etc.
I'm a salaried worker so no time to just cruise off and start this mission. Is there any applicable funding for a startup venture where the person is already employed?
These are the mine fields I must navigate...

Any help greatly appreciated.

242882 2004-06-08 21:49:00 ring a patent attourney and do some enquiring however be aware that they will try to 'sell' you their services, which DONT come cheap at all !!! So listen to what they say but dont 'sign up' or agree to anything till you've done some real thorough checkin drcspy (146)

They might give you some suggestions on possible ways to head, or possible devlopment funding that might be available.

On the other hand, dealing with government bureaucracies... ????

242885 2004-06-08 22:53:00 You can file your own patents, you don't need a patent lawyer. I was looking at a site telling you how to do it a few weeks ago. kiki (762)

Secondly, with all due respect to Kiki, there is a saying:

Yes, you can register your own patents. You can also repair your own teeth, do your own appendectomy, and wire your house. What you cannot do, is learn how to do all of that from the net with absolute confidence you will get it right. You also cannot learn experience. That only comes from doing something again and again.

Get expert advice once you know you need it. In my experience patent attorneys do not waste their time on matters which have no prospect of success. They can quickly tell you the steps involved. It's amazing how many good ideas are not able to be patented or copyrighted.

MS were able to patent it because the US patent system is broken or more accurately hasn't kept up with the times. You'll find a whole bunch of spurious and trivial patents being filed, making hay while the sun shines so to speak. NZ's system isn't much better BTW while the EU's may cause a bit of trouble for the likes of the MS double click patent.
