I was mucking about on Word. I run XP. It crashed- now I can't get into my documents - it says they are being edited - NOT.

Also mentioned 'normal' and the global template I had that trouble years ago fixed it quickly but can't remember how????

Any ideas please

242839 2004-06-08 10:47:00 have you rebooted? if you haven't, then try that.
to fix normal template, search for normal.dot and delete...
word should rebuild it when you launch again.

242840 2004-06-08 10:55:00 I have about 8 normal.dots do I delete the lot of them... This sounds very familiar Sherilee (4441)
242841 2004-06-08 10:58:00 yeah delete them all. just leave them in the recycle bin. that way if things get worse you can still restore them. timo (5725)
242842 2004-06-08 12:37:00 Hi Sherilee, see this article here (support.microsoft.com) for more details. You should also delete the owner file/s as well which will contain the last edits you made to the document/s in question. Because you had a crash they may be corrupt but you can try renaming the file/s as a different name to the original if they were important changes you dont want to retype.

As an explanation of what is happening, when you open a document an owner file (a temporary file) is created of the document which stores changes you make to the document and locks it for your use only unless you have sharing enabled. If someone else tries to open the document they will get the message you received basically saying its already in use. When you close the file, the owner file is supposed to be deleted.

However, if Word couldnt close properly - because of your crash - then the owner file remains. Next time you open the document it still thinks someone is using it because of the existence of the owner file hence the message you get.

242843 2004-06-09 07:25:00 Now my CPU usage is up at 100%. My computer is running so sluggish and hangs??????????? Sherilee (4441)
242844 2004-06-09 07:37:00 Were they big doc files, did you get any messages about debugging, have you done the above?

If you've tried the the fixes, update your antivirus software, pull the plug on the internet and scan for nasties.
