242659 2004-06-07 22:03:00 Greetings,

I purchased a DSE PCI TV-Tuner / FM Radio Card (XH6765) for about 90 bucks on Clearance a short while ago. Its based on the Philips saa7134 chipset, and comes with a Remote Control / Receiver.

What I'd like to do is use the Remote with my Laptop's IR Port (If this is possible).

I quite frequently use my laptop in my car, more-so than I use my TV Tuner Card and remote. I run music from my laptop through my car stereo, however sometimes a song comes on and I'd really like to be able to simply skip the track.
This becomes an issue because to change song in WinAmp, I've got to open the lid, Hit "B" and close the lid again. This means I usually have to pull the car over to the side of the road and stop, or get a passenger to do it for me.

What I want is to be able to use the Remote with the Laptop's IR Port (On the front of the laptop) if its in any way possible, and I'm sure I've seen a WinAmp plugin for IR Remotes.

Is it at all possible? How would I go about setting it up? Do I need Drivers?

Many thanks

A driver would certainly solve the problem. Then you could sit in the passenger seat and change the track at will. :D

242661 2004-06-08 02:45:00 The laptop's IR uses irDA. I am pretty sure that the MP3 Juke box which Silicon Chip had a project for didn't -- it used a "standard" TV/video control which uses some flavour of the TV industry IR control protocol. Which is not irDA So it's part of the way for what you want.

It wasn't really a plug-in for WinAmp; it was something like a command-line interface for WinAmp which took commands from an IR receiver on the serial port and did not work "properly" for anyone who failed to RTM and tried to drive it with a mouse. :D

Asearch fpr "MP3 jukebox" should find the things which have been done. A lot of it is for Linux, but I'm pretty sure there were Windows versions too.

I think the SC project used a homebuilt IR interface, connected to the serial port, but I wasn't very interested at the time. Talking to the IR interface in any way other than the irDA or FIR protocols might be possible. Linux can talk to some ... The Palm Pilot software under Windows can't find the builtin IR on my Winbook laptop -- wrong chip set. :_|

Good luck.

242662 2004-06-08 04:17:00 Well, right now its Dual-booting with Xandros and WinXP, possibly going to be Gentoo and WinXP shortly, so if you suggest I use Linux, that's not a problem, in fact I would rather but wasnt sure if the technology was there.

Ive never really had much fun with lirc, Im assuming that's what I should be looking for?

Any chance you could give me a bit more of a kick in the right direction? I tried Googl'ing for some MP3 Jukebox for Linux stuff, but didnt get much results.
Ive found http://cajun.sf.net but Im not sure if its what Im after.. Im downloading now to try :-)

Cheers

242663 2004-06-08 04:20:00 I think you will find Graham's right, irDA interfaces will not talk to consumer appliance IR devices.
Have a look at http://www.girder.nl for how to do it (in Windows).

242664 2004-06-08 06:10:00 Obviously you need a new car: a Dodge Super8 Hemi. :D You learn about that from Google :"Mp3 jukebox linux". "jukebox siliconchip" and "jukebox silicon chip", will get you more about the SC one (uses VB6 it seems for the interface to the IR). Have a look at sourceforge.org too -- I'm sure there'll be a project there. Graham L (2)
242665 2004-06-08 06:17:00 If women can drive and put on makeup and do their hair and talk on the cellphone; how hard can it be to hit "B" on a keyboard? antmannz (28)
242666 2004-06-08 06:24:00 Well, to be honest, I can drive and use the Jump-to-song function perfectly fine (That's why God gave us traffic lights ;-)), but I'd rather just be able to use my little remote :D

Thanks Graham, I'll have a look through Google some more then :-)

Cheers
