243408 2004-06-11 02:04:00 DistroWatch (www.distrowatch.com) reports that Xandros has released a free edition of Xandros Desktop, called Open Circulation Edition (OCE).

The Open Circulation Edition is a limited version of Xandros Desktop OS that can be downloaded at no charge and freely distributed to others. It is strictly for non-commercial use, and no e-mail installation support is included.

More info here (www.xandros.com) and here (www.xandros.com).

243409 2004-06-11 02:18:00 Yeah, I saw that press release a few days ago (KNewsTicker is great :D).

A couple of catchya's with the new OCE version of Xandros. First of all it can only be downloaded via BitTorrent for free, a US$10 charge applies if you wish to download via their http server. They also cripple the burning speed of CD writers to the minimum speed of your device (guess this is incentive to buy the commercial version which doesn't have this limitation).

I also find it interesting the only browser included is a ad-sponsored browser (Opera) - again, if you pay for the commerical version you can get it ad free. I don't know why they didn't also include Mozilla or Mozilla Firebird instead which is fully open source.

A good feature is that OCE supports NTFS support whereas the Xandros 2.0 Standard Edition does not.

243410 2004-06-11 03:00:00 Im 55% through the download now :-) Began yesterday afternoon and its tickling in at 4KB/s (Ive not limited it up or down so there's 28KB/s left of upload room on my current connection people!)

They dont install a browser like Firefox by default (Probably) because they've liscenced the ads, so they're getting money for the Ads in Opera.

Glad to see they've released a "Free" edition though. I just came across it by chance while browsing Xandros.com :D

KNewsTicker is on its way here..... Man I cant wait to have it back! ;-)

If anybody wants a copy then let me know :-) I'll be leaving my torrent client open for a while after its done too, coz this is slow as :-(

Just on a slightly different note, who else here at PressF1 has used Xandros, which edition, and how did you find it?

243411 2004-06-11 20:12:00 From what I hear it is not very secure by default and needs locking down by the user. mikebartnz (21)
243412 2004-06-12 00:06:00 With respect to a free Xandros CD, my introduction to it came as a free Australian PC magazine cover CD for Xandros version 2. It came with Mozilla as a web browser complete with Java and also the explorer like programme for puddling about the hard drive etc (a modified Konquer) is also a web browser.

This CD also came with a trial version of Crossover office which allows you to install and run Microsoft Office happily on the PC. I was so impressed with this distribution which is descendant I understand from the Corel Distro, that I went out to Noel Leemings and bought a copy of the Delux version for $145.00. You get a great manual that is near an inch thick with that. Very easy to use and update and what did it for me is that Xandros found and installed drivers for my Dynalink Lucent based winmodem and it connected ok first time. There are two CDs to the purchased Deluxe version 2.0

243413 2004-06-12 00:07:00 i suspect the reason for only opera is file size. its been a while since i played with firefox or mozilla but opera is far smaller to download. don't forget opera is a fantastic browser :) tweak'e (174)
243414 2004-06-12 00:59:00 Howdy Chill,

I picked up a copy of Xandros Version 1 last year. I was going to install it on my parents computer when Microsoft decided to discontinue support for Windows 98, but they came to their senses :D

After that I upgraded it to Version 2 which (as mentioned) was on the April PC Authority cover disk.

Obviously the cover disk version doesn't have Crossover :|

Not a bad distro and it has an exceptionally good/easy update interface. Which I always think is a very good idea.

Very user friendly, if all you are after is basic computing functions.

The main problem is of course that I'm a dyed in the wool SuSE fan ;)

I love the Networking integration, and the File-manager is quite homely for somebody like my Employer who I setup with Xandros 2 Standard off the PCA Cover Disc.

I personally found the Xandros-Networks too simple, and would like at least kpackage if I cant have my emerge :D

Brilliant Distro for people interested in an alternate OS to the Microsoft bundled software that comes with most PC's.... But I'll take Gentoo any day ;-)

I use Xandros Desktop 2 (probably the free version does not include Crossover Office), and last week upgraded to Xandros Business Edition .

The main difference with the Business Edition is that it includes a DVD player and CD Burner as standard, and Star Office (which seems better than Open Office, but maybe that is because it is very similar to the Gates' equivalent suite, and it seems more familiar) . Bus Ed also included scanner software as part of the installation (perhaps it was installed because it detected the scanner on one of my shared printers?) .

I tried Mandrake and Fedora as my introduction to Linux, and find Xandros much easier to use as a computer klutz . Especially the facility to install packages via Xandros Networks .

I have already posted quite a bit on Xandros (when I first started using it), so won't repeat myself . The only thing I cannot get it to do is use WiFi on my Fujitsu laptop . Intel don't seem to want to prepare a Linux driver for their wireless card, and it is being slowly prepared by the usual open source community gurus . If I could get the wireless networking going I would probably swap over completely .

Setting up wired LAN networking with Windows is almost automatic, and it can also "see" the other Windows partitions on the same computer .

The guy that supplied this to me now says that the latest Suse Business Edition is the go, and he reckons it is going to be better than Xandros . Sigh . . .
