243296 2004-06-10 09:40:00 Hey there, I have a quite a pickle .

My mate has a computer, its a Matrix one from Barrels 100% electric store, AMD Duron 1400mhz with 256mb ram and a Matrox hdd .

Well he was on holiday for about a week or so, he forget to keep his room open and his room got quite damp . Well he fired up his computer when he got home and checked his emails, it said he had 54, he told me he got 6 done and then the internet cut out or something, so he shut it down for about 3 minutes .

However, when he started it back up again, the screen didnt post, no BIOS beep or anything . The HDD think light was always on and the cd-rom was flashing hardout, after a while the CD-ROM stops flashing and the HDD light goes out also, but the Power light is on .

Well, i took off the cover had a look around, and started it up (to hear the hdd) and it started, the computer beeped, hdd whirled . It went to load windows and then it froze on the Green loading bar (win xp home) and im not sure if i heard the hdd whirl down (as if it was stoping or slowing)

So i restarted it, and it did the same thing . Then i went to safe mode, this worked . But this is about as far as I got .

Very confused as to what it may be . Perhaps the dampness, so i told him when he next has a fire put the computer in the same room and dry it out for a bit with the cover off, but not to close to the fire might melt things .

Cheers,

MrBeef

243300 2004-06-10 10:23:00 In safe mode, disable everything uder the start up tab via msconfig and reboot.

If it makes no difference then say so,you need to work through these things in a logical order.

243301 2004-06-10 10:25:00 And System restore is near on a waste of time,Every single time a computer has been in bad enough shape to warrent it being bought into the shop all the restore points are frazzeld,I put zero faith in it and ignore it as a nice try but a waste of time and harddrive space. metla (154)
243302 2004-06-10 11:13:00 Okay, i think he was gunna call the manufactor anyway, but if i catch him before that i'll give it a whirl (msconfig) MrBeef (342)
243303 2004-06-11 02:28:00 I think the damp room is a red herring, I have seen computers in East Timor run for six months while I was there no problems.
We are talking in tents, no sides, with 100 humidity ie torrential monsoon rain for weeks on end and occasionally doused with water from leaks or rips in tent during storms.
In fact I have seen the power supply fans flicking out water spray from inside the CPU no probs.
I would think you have an OS issue if the computer still boots to safe mode.
Yes system restore on XP is garbage, when ever you need it will let you down. Bit like GPS when you really need it in an aircraft like lost under thick cloud. It will always come with no satellite coverage.
