243290 2004-06-10 05:14:00 I have AMD Athlon, NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 model 64. Ihave installed driver"NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run" to /etc/XF86Config-4, to try and solve things. Problem: V.slow after boot, then intermittant slow. Mouse arrow goes off side of screen and dissapears for 20 secs. All slowness coincides with "KDE System Guard" displaying user% 98% from maybe 1to4% on X (/etc/x11/x) and system% at 0.4%. So obviously X is grabbing all resouses intermittent. Installing driver did not solve but may have helped. I think my video mode is correct and I have tried a few to no avail. Any help appreciated. Thanks Ben. benb (5138)
243291 2004-06-10 06:13:00 Have you modified your /etc/X11/XF86Config file (Or do Mandrake use /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 still?) to use nvidia as your driver or are you still using nv or vesa?

Have you followed the nVidia ReadMe file which tells you how to modify your XF86Config file?

243292 2004-06-10 07:17:00 Hi Ben,

>Ihave installed driver"NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run" to /etc/XF86Config-4

Can I just clarify you installed the nVidia driver by the described method listed in the Readme (ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-5336/README). So, you booted into runlevel 3 and ran the installer from the command line using sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run? Sorry to ask, but the way you have worded the above statement suggests you might of done something different.

Please accept my apologies if it is me who has misinterpreted your statement, but I thought it best to check this. :)

243293 2004-06-10 11:17:00 Have a bit of a search through PressF1, as Jen wrote a brilliant FAQ (It really should be labelled that) on installing nvidia drivers in Linux. IIRC, It was a thread with Jaguar about making Fedora more homely??

Anyways, have a search through PressF1, as Im sure you'll find it!

Cheers

243294 2004-06-14 09:38:00 I had similar problems with Mandrake 9.2
I got Xandross 2 off an Australian PC Magazine Cd and it found everything, set up the sound, video, router, modem on its own.
The only questions it asked me, other than names etc was the time zone.
I also installed Microsoft Office 2000 which runs perfectly.
When I install any shade of Windows, I have to install all the Motherboard drivers. Xandross works without them.
I have used Mandrake, Red Hat & Yoper, Xandross is the only one that I can actually get some work done on.

243295 2004-06-14 17:07:00 Sorry Jen I Go away a lot. Yes I did all the right things but i now think it something else. The comp. boots into Man 10. And the little slider KDE goes to 100% everything is ok. If it stops at 85% its real slow. The mouse pointer stops at the end of the left of the screen but falls off the right hand side and all grinds to a halt & cpu user % goes to 98%??? I have mucked around with the BIOS Placed ACPI=off in the lilo config file and tried lots of things. The NVIDIA driver .....5336-run... works perfect. Tux racer is great. BUT I reboot maybe 2or 3 times and suddenly all stops again??? Like the other posting in Windows I get an error 10 for my Trident Accel Blade 3d??? Knoppix & Red hat Work perfect. Any Ideas Anyone. I am happy to e-mail anyone with full details. For 2 weeks from 16 june I am subject(Ben Engineer) mvkent@strait.co.nz Ta Ben benb (5138)
