We're about the only country in the world without legislation, however has legislation in the large spam producing nations made a scrap of difference? No, it hasn't. In fact spam is still worse today than it was yesterday, but not as bad as it'll be tomorrow. Like it or not, it's here to stay for some time yet until the e-mail service is completely revamped. A spammer could open a cable account, even a dial-up one and set up a *nix box, fire out a couple of million e-mails direct from that machine. Close the account and move on - traceless essentially. As for the idea of e-mailing them all back, when was the last time a spammer used a valid e-mail address? |

| 243195 | 2004-06-10 02:54:00 | I can understand Johns frustration although I would not suggest his methods . Marg . As others have done, I suggest you change your email address, give that out to the people you want to correspond with and that is all . Suggest to your friends that they should all use good anti-virus, spy and adware programmes . Open up a new hotmail account and use that only for web forms logins, etc . This will be your throw away account, have one up your sleeve for good measure for the time when the hotmail accounts back is broken by crud . Also good to do is, ditch Microsoft IE and OE and get yourself less vulnerable (for now) browser and email clients like Mozilla (comes with mail & spam filter), Mozilla Firefox browser and Thunderbird, Opera, Pegassus mail, MyIE2, etc . You may be lucky and get a polite reply from an ISP but bluntly I think you are wasting your time. Using Xtra which puts a [SPAM] prefix on messages and use a Mailwasher filter which deletes [SPAM], currently getting about one or 2 spam a day that the Xtra Spam Filter is not picking up. |

| 243197 | 2004-06-10 03:54:00 | Hi Beama, Am using Outlook Express 6. Is the ISP a group of numbers or what. Your last sentence was truly inspiring, but for the moment I'll just avoid using sites that request my email address. The spam only started over the last week, and I've been busy typing out notes during that time and have not had the need to enter my email address for anything during that time, but now I'd just like it all sorted out. To the group that responded so heartily to each other re: your comment, you really are an interesting group. Have any of you met each other? Couldn't believe the debate I'd started. It would be hilarious to get all of you in a bar and see you how you interact in the flesh. (In the nicest possible way of course.) This is my little thought for the day: If there were no spammers, there would be no antispammer creators. Spammers make money from their advertising. Antispammers (some of them) make money from the suckers like me who get spammed. Is there any where in this cycle that the suckers could create a niche where we could make some money out of it too. Thanks for the advice, the entertaining debate, now I'm off to get some sleep-eye. Its been a long 30hr day. Regards from Marg. |
