243377 2004-06-10 22:37:00 How do I stop all the anoying stuffn from sneaking into my system when I'm on-line? I have Norton anti-virus which seems to protect pretty good against virus's, but it seems like every time I go on the internet, these "extra..free " programs sneak into my system and start installing something I don't want, bogging down my machine, and they're just about impossible to get rid of. Is there any good program I can get to help stop this stuff? Lycos search...Hot Bar.... Your new home page is.... and on and on. I'd be willing to pay almost any price to stop these goblins. I use Spybot to find some after I've been on-line, and it usualy finds stuff, but is there any way to stopm them before they get in? WILLWILLWILLWILL (236)

And the immunise button within Spybot, they also have a bundled hostfile in spybot u can use,and an app that monitors your computer and won't let any changes take place without your say-so.

I second that! However, don't download it today, as Firefox 0.9 is going to be released within the next couple of days. I have the 0.9 release candidate (Linux version) running at the moment and it great [new features, easier installation with importing other browsers settings/bookmarks/history etc] :D

Review done on 0.9 RC running under Windows here (www.neilturner.me.uk)

PS* the Linux version now comes with a auto-installer setup GUI.

243383 2004-06-11 05:19:00 well I use spyware blaster and also a nice little app from analogx.com called 'scriptdefender' these two work VERY well and every now and then when i'm tempted to bother runnign an adaware or spybot scan i get NOTHING listed.........now that's good...... drcspy (146)
243384 2004-06-11 23:00:00 keep your windows patches upto date. then its just a matter of comman sence on what you click and also what you download and install. unfortunatly it can be tricky when a lot of spyware is bundled with otherwise good programs. just use adaware/spybot and scan after you install something. tweak'e (174)
243385 2004-06-12 09:53:00 Unfortunately a lot of stuff gets onto your computer when you are least expecting it. As others have mentioned, using a different browser to Internet Explorer is a huge help in avoiding the annoying and the nasty.

Recently, whilst downloading some game mods from perfectly legitimate-looking sites, I (mistakenly) thought I had to use Internet Explorer in order to be able to "queue up" for some of them and one particular site took me by surprise by popping up some rather explicit porn pages that I had a job getting rid of. AVG then informed me that the site had also kindly deposited a souvenir on my hard drive in the form of a virus. I immediately switched to Opera for the page I was viewing and had no more problems with popups or viruses from that page.

Parents should be very wary about allowing their children to go surfing for games mods, cheats, etc as a lot of those types of sites are full of images you wouldn't want your children to view. I personally won't allow my children to even be in the same room when I am looking for the things they ask me to get for them for that very reason.

243386 2004-06-12 10:33:00 just one small point......

alternative browsers such as avant, ie2 etc that are IE based are just as bad as IE (as far as spyware/malware is concerned)
