1364037 2014-01-01 08:15:00 Hiya . Hoping someone can help here .

I have a Toshiba R850 running Windows 7 that can't find my wireless router . Other devices (phones, ipads and ipods) can find it no problem just not the laptop . The strangest thing is, once I plug in the network cable straight from the modem, the laptop connects and then I can connect wirelessly . The wifi pops up and I can disconnect and go elsewhere . Only problem is when the computer hibernates I have to do all that all over again .

Any ideas?

Thanks

1364038 2014-01-01 09:22:00 Does the laptop find the wireless if its rebooted without the cable ? If so disable hibernation. Hibernation turns off many functions to save power, with the Ethernet /Wireless being one of them. When it comes out of hibernation its meant to turn back on again, but often doesn't. Plugging the cable can "wake" the Wireless back up. wainuitech (129)

1364040 2014-01-01 10:02:00 OK - Something to try, may or may not help, With the Wireless NOT working, Right click on Computer/ Left click Properties/ Top left, click on Device manager, Is there any ! or X on the Wireless Network Adapter ? There should be two adapters listed, one being the Ethernet the other the wireless.

No matter if there is or isn't, right click the Wireless adapter,Uninstall it, you'll get a warning message, ignore it, you may also get asked to remove or keep drivers KEEP them, reboot the laptop, what "Should" happen is when it reboots the adapter should auto re-install while its loading, you'll see a message bottom right like the one below, then see if it shows the wireless or not.

As silly as it may sound, also make sure the wireless is actually turned on ( dont laugh, I'm serious) you'd be surprised how many calls I get saying the wireless is not working and the local "expert" has spent ages looking at it and cant repair the problem--- its simply someone pressed the off button, the key is normally along the F keys someplace. Most have a Amber light when off, and either green or blue when on. Older laptops have a switch on the side or front edge.

Edited: looking up that model its the F8 Key, has a wireless symbol on it, so it may be FN + F8

1364041 2014-01-01 21:33:00 Hi, thanks again. Wifi is definitely on at the router (other devices can see it) and on my laptop (I can connect once cable plugged in)

I tried uninstalling the adaptor, and it disappeared and then reappeared once I restarted. It didn't pop up like an installation tho, just was there already. And I had to plug in network cable to get back on the net, and I could then go wirelessly. These are the 3 adaptors listed under my device manager, does this help?

Intel(R)82579LM Gigabit Network Connection
Intel Centrino Advanced N-6230
Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport adaptor

When I rightclicked and went uninstall the N6230 one (I didn't do it I was just looking) it also asked whether I wanted to delete the driver files, but it didn't say this when I uninstalled the wifi adaptor. Could this be an issue? The driver still on the pc?

1364042 2014-01-02 23:02:00 Wifi is definitely on at the router I was referring to make sure the Wifi is turned on, on the laptop . You can turn it off by mistake sometimes .

Try turning it on/off a few times see if it reacts . What you should get in in the Icon tray ( on the bottom right) you should get a symbol indicating the wireless, if its off there is usually either no symbol, or the symbol has a X through it .

Being W7, also make sure teh icon is set to show - right click the task Bar, then left click properties / In Notification Area/Customise, scroll through and make sure Show Icon and Notifications is set for the Wireless .

1364043 2014-01-03 02:26:00 I had virtually the same problem but the advice I got suggested I change the router channel setting, e.g. from 3 to 12 etc. It worked first time. Like you a
house full of other devices were finding the signal no problem, everything but my old Toshiba. Worth a try.
