1363764 2013-12-28 04:25:00 Hi All. Could I have some advice please?

I Have...A Toshiba Satellite L10. Intel(R) Pentium(R) M. 1.6Ghz. 589Mhz. 752Ram.XP Home SP3. 14" non touch screen.

I Have Seen...HP Celeron E1. 1.4Ghz. 2GB Ram. W8. Non Touch Screen. For $378 at Harvey Normans.

Is the HP faster that the Toshiba?

Nothing physically wrong with the Toshiba except it has got very slow over the last few months. I have done all the usual "Cleanups" but still the same. What do you think? PJ

1363765 2013-12-28 05:28:00 "Is the HP faster that the Toshiba?" Depends on how you would describe faster. Celeron are low end CPU's, and while the newer Lappy, (HP) has W8 and more Ram, you cant really compare because XP doesn't need as much "grunt" to run as W8.

BUT on saying that it also depends on what is running in the back ground. If you had nothing more than the basic's and an antivirus that doesn't use 3/4 of your power, and not exactly want to multitask, it "would do" as a general knock about for basic web surfing, emails etc.

I set up an all in one with similar specs earlier this year - it was :sleep:sleep while waiting for it to do tasks one at a time, it was a little awkward when the owner asked why her new computer was taking so long to do things -- The polite answer I gave was "its working to within its specifications and speed"

The answer in my head which I couldn't really say was - its a heap of low spec rubbish

Its the ol story -- get what you pay for.

At $378 its not exactly ever going to be what you would call a high (or mid range ) spec machine. Seen many low speced computers run like a car with 4 flat tyres and the hand brake on after a short while, and the owners wonder why they are so slow.

Personal Opinion, is to save all your data, reinstall XP from fresh, as its more than likely suffering from windows bloat,( regardless of all the cleaning) and save up some more money and buy something more powerful.

Oh dear! After trying to install a copy of XP and having nothing but major update problems, I would be so very wary of trying to do another install. Be very afraid unless someone has a fool-proof method!!!!

1363767 2013-12-28 07:57:00 Just did a reinstall of a XP today, apart from having to hunt for the damn Audio driver, for a rather old MB- Grrrrrrrrr Everything went through fine, all updates etc. wainuitech (129)

I wouldn't attempt it now. My brain is not up to it anymore. To many "TIA" brain attacks. PJ

Just some info for you, The HP asked about, its just above Minimum specs for running W8 -- Specs from MS: windows.microsoft.com

So along those lines, look at what your Toshiba has in the way of specs, and how its running -- Now look at the minimum specs for XP support.microsoft.com

Any specs Microsoft put out are really the MINIMUM it will run on. Try running any PC on minimum specs and you'll soon be very disappointed.

HP end user stuff is awful.
You would buy another PC because of slow??!! After a while, depending on installs/uninstalls etc, you will get bloat.

The only real cure is a fresh install.

It's not that hard, back up your data, ensure you have the drivers first - or in the case of laptops - the recovery discs, then go.

It will make an amazing difference.

This Toshiba was a gift from Barnabas. It is much valued & basically there is nothing wrong with it & serves me well. I use it more than this PC.
It has 752MB of ram, which I assume is 1x512 & 1x256.I will look into bigger ram sticks.I guess more ram will help.Whether I can find any is another story!. PJ
