so the joke goes, where does one find maari?

punchline : in the petfood isle.


maori is pronounced similar to mould.

prounounced the way it is by tv presenters is inherently racist as it means dog food.

so the next time an ignorant racist says the wrong word, i wish to tell a joke that should garner a smile from any te reo speakers.


educate with humor.


trouble is i do not know where to begin with translating this joke.

maoridictionary.co.nz has been little help.

can't identify half most of the stuff i say.

1342851 2013-05-24 02:07:00 I wouldn't say people are intentionally being racist, moreover it's a blend of being slightly uneducated and our accent.

Same way my sister (who speaks relatively good Chinese after living in Beijing for a year) realized she'd been mispronouncing "chicken" I think it was, if you say it wrong you're no longer referring to a bird but a vagina. Not being racist but her pronunciation was off. You could make the term PC by claiming that maari is the english word for Maori. Corruption of words due to accent/mis understanding is common, it simply becomes part of the language.

Still, spread the education :) Just make sure you don't sound like a tosser when you educate, people always get a little titchy if you (or anyone) corrects them mid sentance. 		The Error Guy (14052)

just say mouldy; Mau-ree is the pronouncation that means dog food.

unlike english these differences do matter.

The likelihood of your finding any te reo speakers decreases in proportion to the distance you are from a marae (or a primary school) .

If we're going on about pronunciation of 'foreign' words by newsreaders and the like, I would agree - however when newsreaders start to pronounce Spanish (and French and German and Chinese) names correctly, then and only then will I worry about how they pronounce maori words .

There are one HELL of a lot more speakers of Spanish (and French and German and Chinese) in the world (and probably NZ, if it comes to it) than there are who speak maori . 		johcar (6283)

needs to be stopped by the light of truth.

or in this case the sound of truth.

when spanish becomes an official NZ language ill care a bit more about how NZ tv presenters pronounce spanish.

you'd not expect tv presenters in spain to pronounce español wrong.
