| 1342929 | 2013-05-25 07:04:00 | Learning a second language is a good idea but should not be left til school-age - kindergarten or even earlier is best. As for pronunciation, the French don't pronounce their capital city "Paris" so when I am speaking English, why should I be expected to pronounce non-english words in a non-english way? |

| 1342938 | 2013-05-26 06:58:00 | I read through this with a grin and the occasional cringe. 1 very obvious point that seems to not have been commented on, the OP doesn't speak Maori and we are supposed to take his opinion on how it's pronounced seriously? If you want to be taken seriously you need to have a bit more knowledge of the subject you are ranting about. Myself I've given up changing how I pronounce words every time someone decides it should be done differently. Also about; Discussing how to pronounce maori is a useless waste of time. Maori had no written language before the Europeans arrived. The missionaries wrote it down as they heard it. So why would they write Tauranga if the maoris pronounced it Toerunga? These were educated people. They wrote it down as they heard it. A. You've got that bit wrong, yes they created the language based on what they heard, but just because they used english letters to represent Maori vowel sounds doesn't mean they sound how they would in english. You learnt the vowel sounds in school most likely, so you already know they sound different to the english versions. what they did was attempt to create an alphabet based on all the unique letter sounds they could identify and then assigned each sound to the nearest english letter for the purposes of writing it down. If they had just written everything down phonetically we would not have had all theses debates over how to say the words. "Wh" is very close to "F" but apparently not exactly the same, I can't hear it myself. Written Maori is not english and the letters despite appearances are not english either. Another note, there is not a single correct way to say a word in Maori that has ever been recorded. What we have is an accepted standard in many circles but that doesn't mean it's accurate. There were many minor regional variations in dialect and pronunciation, who chooses which was the correct one. To accuse someone who speaks a language with an accent of being racist is ridiculous. When a foreign tourist asks a question in heavily accented english am I offended by their clear racism towards me? don't be stupid of course not. If Maori want to keep their language alive and have it as an official language of the country they settled first, then good on them. It hurts no one to allow them to keep their culture alive and I certainly don't feel in any way disadvantaged as an english only speaker. Just don't expect me to learn it and pronounce it properly especially when you haven't bothered yourself. |
