1342921 2013-05-25 01:34:00 Discussing how to pronounce maori is a useless waste of time. Who is there amongst us that can categorically say what is correct?

My understanding of the correct pronunciation of any language is the way that it is pronounced by the native speakers of that language. As far as the maori language is concerned there are not too many of those.

The laughable attempts at maori pronunciation by the TV newsreaders sounds ridiculous. Who do they consult? Or do they just make it up?

Orportorki for Opotiki, Toepor for Taupo. And many more of a similar ilk. And how do you come up with Fongaray for Whangarei? Pronouncing wh as f is just insane.

Maori had no written language before the Europeans arrived. The missionaries wrote it down as they heard it. So why would they write Tauranga if the maoris pronounced it Toerunga? These were educated people. They wrote it down as they heard it. Any other way of pronouncing maori is ludicrous.

And as for learning another language is concerned, it makes much more sense to learn a useful tounge such as a European language or Mandarin or Cantonese.

What good is maori? Even the majority of the moaris can't speak their own tongue.

If you must learn another language, don't waste your time with something that has little or no use. Learn something useful. Speak a language that others can understand.

The sounds in Japanese and Maori may have a correlation, but that's the only similarity between them.

(It does make Maori placenames much easier for the Japs though.)

Not illegal, just impractical. The train could be hours, if not days, late. ;) :D
