1342902 2013-05-24 09:05:00 Over the very short course of my life so far I have delved into several languages, French, Spanish, Indonesian and Chinese. Theoretically I should be freaking amazing at languages. Frankly I'm utter shite. Your ability to learn a 2nd language (or learn anything for that matter) is directly proportional to your willing and commitment to learn. As far as schools go, you're wasting you time teaching kids that don't want to learn Maori. Have an optional class, that way you get motivated kids doing well, and good on them.

As far as language in schools go, why don't we teach Fijian, Tongan or Samoan? There's just as many Pacific Islanders here as Maori (if not more) so if you are going to force teach a language in schools, make it the one everyone understands (English) - not being racist or anything but kids aren't going to learn what they don't want to and other than keeping the language alive (which I do believe is important for NZ and the Maori) it serves no real purpose. You can't leave NZ and speak Maori anywhere. You can learn French, Spanish, German or Chinese and you'd be surprised at where you can apply the skill. I frequently have very short and extremely simple talks with local chinese business owners around Wellington.

everyone should be forced to learn a second language. the choice of language should be entirely up to the student. clearly a programming language should count.

and we should abolish money.

That's pretty much what happened at my high school. All Year 9 students had to take a language class (which the student could choose), and Year 10 students in advanced classes also had to take a language. After that, it was optional.

clearly a programming language should count.

HTML and CSS, possibly. Can't see most high school kids wanting to (or be able to) learn a programming language.

and we should abolish money.

PS What the ... is fiat money?
en.wikipedia.org

The term fiat money has been defined variously as:

any money declared by a government to be legal tender (en.wikipedia.org).[7] (en.wikipedia.org)
state-issued money which is neither convertible by law to any other thing, nor fixed in value in terms of any objective standard.[8] (en.wikipedia.org)
money without intrinsic value (en.wikipedia.org).[9] (en.wikipedia.org)[10] (en.wikipedia.org)

Forcing someone to learn something is the best way I know to build resentment in a student, and is totally counter-productive. If someone doesn't want to learn, they won't.
