I'm of the "one rule for all" school of thought myself. Discriminating based on culture could be interpreted as racism, if they allow one lady to have a tattoo because it's cultural then they have to allow anyone to, and as pointed out despite it often being overlooked there are many European cultures. Some of my ancestors were scottish and Irish, if I want a traditional celtic tattoo (I don't) it could have just as much cultural significance to me as this one does to the woman in question. I don't know anything about this lady but I suspect a lot of people are guilty of using their culture as an excuse to get their own way when in fact it doesn't mean that much to them culturally speaking. |

If they make an exception on 'cultural' grounds, then they'll be faced with people perpetually stretching the rule... to moko on the chin, ever larger tats on various body parts. Hell, even having a mob tattoo across your face could be regarded as 'cultural'. Would you want a tattooed and punctured face of a neo-nazi satanist on your flight crew? They would claim theirs is cultural as well. We had a young fellow join our work team a couple of years ago. He'd been raised by punk parents, had a nose ring, and big, stretched punched out piercings in his ear lobes, which were filled with large rings. And he was the nicest bloke you could ask for. And darn good at his job. But we got to witness the blunt discrimination those 'choices' got from customers, and ultimately that may impact on the businesses profitability if his 'choices' send customers running elsewhere. It taught me about discrimination, the customers and my own, but if I were interested in the businesses reputation and bottom line I would not risk offending customers with employees who are showing questionable judgement regarding their own future and employability. |

Certainly my teenagers aren't attracted to tattoos but they can't see the fuss either. The reality is many younger people sport tattoos and they have become mainstream. In my day bikers and sailors were the only people who had them but that has changed in a major way. Air New Zealand merrily paint Maori moko on their aeroplanes and celebrate our culture. It does seem inconsistent to reject a person with the same type of decoration. she should get a pay rise, anyone who sports maori tattoos should be payed more than anyone else. arent they supposed to be pushing the NZ 'brand'? |

I have yet to see a tattoo that I thought enhanced the person's appearance but then, I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Thank you but I would just as soon not have to be the beholder. |

But New Zealand's 'brand' is 100% pure...clean and green and all of that. Does this mean all clean shaven, non tattooed people, who wear green clothes should also get paid more than others? edit - provided they've also had a shower before boarding the plane :p |
