1342869 2013-05-24 03:39:00 to argue that maori is useless because of the lack of speakers outside of new zealand is to cut off your nose to spite your face.

There's a lack of speakers of Maori inside New Zealand as well.

Name ten people who can speak Maori but not English...

1342870 2013-05-24 03:47:00 I learned French, Latin, German and Spanish in school - I even still remember some of it! :)

These languages are far more useful to a 21st person than maori. They won't help me learn Chinese or Swahili since there are no crossover points in the origins of these languages, however having a common root (Latin) enables easier learning of other Romance-based and/or related languages (Scandinavian or Cyrillic - although the Cyrillic alphabet is a bit of a head-scratcher!!).

The only thing that learning maori might do is give a learner an appreciation for a different grammatical structure than they are used to. It can only ever be used in NZ - with a small section of the populace - whereas ANY other language enables communication to large sections of the world - Mandarin and English being the most spoken languages in the world, followed closely by Spanish. Maori isn't even in the top 30! (www.krysstal.com)

I would seriously doubt that it was in the top 200.

And in case you haven't noticed, we're a lot closer to the rest of the world these days!

1342871 2013-05-24 03:47:00 Mohdee is a bit too variable to be taken seriously yet.
Like play dough, it is alright for toying with but there's not a lot of use for it in reality.

1342872 2013-05-24 03:58:00 IMO every language helps getting to the next.

not learning maori in school is silly as learning a 3rd and 4th language becomes MUCH easier.

to argue that maori is useless because of the lack of speakers outside of new zealand is to cut off your nose to spite your face.

unless being a slave to one language appeals to you. What a load of rubbish. Its just a shame todays people cant learn to speak English properly and clearly before learning anything else. As for the Maori language, 9/10 either cant speak it, don't want to learn it, know how irrelevant it is etc etc. If Maori (which there really aren't any left, only Maori-wannabes as they can get a hand-out for saying they are) want to keep their language alive, maybe they should learn it, its their language. Its not to be forced on anyone else in school or elsewhere, were you forced to speak Japanese or German in school? No, so why force someone to learn a dead language - which is against your basic Human Rights. Not learning Maori in school is far from silly, it gives you time to learn something of value that will get you somewhere in life.

Now, if you want to sit beside a mud pool dipping in your flax bag with kumara in it hoping it will cook someone before the sun goes down and all the while looking like some pet monkey in a zoo while more highly educated people look and laugh at how barbaric you look and sound, then by all means, spend your life skills learning Maori, take Maori Studies at Uni or whatever.

1342873 2013-05-24 04:06:00 it doesn matter what the languages have in common

my point is learning ANY language as a second language IS A SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNT.

doesnt matter what language it is, it WILL make learning subsequent languages easier.

with the amount of funding our official languages receive, why be cherry picky?

until as recently as the 1980s children were BEATEN for speaking maori in schools.

you lot are being racist bigots.

be more open minded eh'

nose/face again.

ask a coder.

1342874 2013-05-24 04:19:00 anyhow, digressions aside, how would i tell my 'joke' in maori? Mirddes (10)
1342875 2013-05-24 04:23:00 until as recently as the 1980s children were BEATEN for speaking maori in schools

This may have some connection to the reason why there is a larger population of Maori in Sydney than there is in New Zealand.

P.S.
maori should always be written with a capital M ... Maori.

And I don't appreciate being called a racist in your comment "you lot are being racist bigots"... You don't know me and if you had called me that to my face, you may not appreciate the reply. I'm sure there are others on this forum who would also not appreciate you classifying them as racist or bigots.

1342876 2013-05-24 04:26:00 Gotta love how some people suddenly throw the "bigot" and "racist" words in when others disagree with their own way of thinking......

anyhow, digressions aside, how would i tell my 'joke' in maori? With your voice.

1342877 2013-05-24 04:29:00 ask a coder. I'm a coder. I disagree with you. Learning Java did not help very much with learning Python. pcuser42 (130)
1342878 2013-05-24 04:32:00 anyhow, digressions aside, how would i tell my 'joke' in maori?

I imagine you'd have to learn maori to be able to tell the 'joke' in maori...

(@SP8's - it is a deliberate choice of mine to lowercase "maori")
