1363903 2013-12-30 18:39:00 Cheers CliveM for the reply. The cabinet is about 200-300 meters away from my house, would you recommend moving to another company other than telecom for their VDSL line in terms of price and bandwidth plans?

Thanks
I am with Xtra and it just works without problems. As it is all the same copper wire and cabinet and it is the same people that hook it up for you I guess you make your choice of provider on price and perhaps service as reported by others. If your current ISP is ok I would not change unless the price difference was large enough to make it sensible to do so.

1363905 2014-01-02 21:59:00 I purchased the TP-LINK TL-SG1008D yesterday along with the required ethernet cables and the performance has increased in terms of my internet - touch wood. The xbox isn't lagging anymore and overall I'm getting a better gaming experience.

Thanks a lot for all the advice, Cheers.

1363906 2014-01-02 22:46:00 Just ordered the 5 port version after finding a GB link gives 3 times the throughput of my 100Mb switch. Don't really need it but, hey, the price is attractive so why not? linw (53)
1363907 2014-01-02 23:10:00 Internet you don't really need for 1Gbps network but you mind as well given that price isn't that much more and you get to future proof it a bit better. Cat5e can do 1Gbps also - and for say copying files around, sharing vids etc ... Even with a typical rotary HD I get 60MB/sec averaged out. Althou in the future more ISPs should offer connections over 100Mbps, Snap is now/was offering 200Mbps under a trial programme.

Edit I think I have the same one as you. We have it upstairs for 2x ports to the 3x bedrooms and 1x linked to downstairs to the router and 1x to the bedroom downstairs yet to be installed they don't need it yet but the wire is there.

1363908 2014-01-02 23:40:00 www.wikihow.com could have been worth a try.

If you used interior cable it needs to be protected from direct sunlight and water or it won't last very well.

1363909 2014-01-03 00:05:00 We used outdoor UV cables, I think there is an expensive one called gel cable but was told that is for burial. We had ours just under our oudoor wooden deck floor and then thru the wall. Nomad (952)
1363910 2014-01-03 11:23:00 Yeah given your ADSL2+ connection will max out around 20mbps and your VDSL2 connection will max out around 50mbps... Having gigabit over 100mbps ethernet offers *zero* advantage when it comes to your internet speeds and gaming online. Chilling_Silence (9)
