1342625 2013-05-23 02:00:00 Depends, AFAIK there's no real way a home user could intentionally abuse an HDMI port to the point of failure in the way descrived. Unless the kids did something fishy and aren't saying anything I'd say that the fault occurred during normal operation and as such should be covered by CGA/Warranty.

Anyway that's my opinion, unless you word it badly I doubt anyone will have a problem with your story :)

Common Kid behaviour even among the good ones.

Know anyone nearby with a working HDMI input you can plug the XBox into? It's possible if the XBOX was powered up without a working HDMI connection it defaulted itself back to a different output.

I have had a couple of wierd handshaking issues with HDMI before that make me think it is possible it's just a setting somewhere. My TV for example won't let me select an HDMI input unless it detects a signal on it and my previous media PC wouldn't output a picture Via HDMI unless it detected a monitor connected... needless to say they would not work together. I fixed that by feeding it through an HDMI capable receiver first but that caused other issues.

PBtech and Jaycar have a good range of cheap cables between them if you still need any.

Bloody good point actually, fire up the 360 and check the HDMI settings, change them to something you know is good or bump them down to 480p just to make sure the cable's working. One TV of mine only takes 1080i, took a LONG time trying to work out why there was no signal, the previous setting had been at 1080p and of course the TV didn't like that.

1342628 2013-05-23 07:48:00 Scrounged an original xbox component cable off a mate. Got Xbox up and running on an av channel no problem. Selected a variety of 720P and 1080i ( TV wont display 1080p) and all good. Swapped over the component for the hdmi and black screen !

Tried different HDMI cables that work, tried different HDMI ports that I know work but still black screen.

Oh and re the kids. Mum was there as well. No farting around. Just replugged the HDMI's back into the xbox and saw nothing. The HDMI port on the telly ( where the xbox was plugged into ) is still dead to the world although Ports 1 and 3 and all the AV's/ components work just fine with all my other kit. I'm reckoning coincidence is just too much here and something ( Xbox or Telly) has gone pop and shorted out the thing attached at the other end of the cable.

Can I assume the xbox HDMI is broken or are there any other checks I can perform before pitching it back to the shop for a looksee.

Cheers
