1363608 2013-12-26 04:16:00 I have a slight problem with my two HD's and wondering whether someone can help me out.

C: has a clean install of Win7 ... my E: has XP. My E: used to be my C: drive before getting a new HD & installing Win7. I changed boot order and everything was good ...

On boot up, I had both of the drives coming up with choice of "Win7" or and "earlier version of windows". I could go into XP and use the programs on that drive which I couldn't transfer to Win7. Everything was working perfectly, although I can't really remember exactly how I managed to make it work that way, but it was very handy !

I changed boot sequence in the bios to the new HD, designated C: with Win7 Boot sequence is 1st USB - 2nd CD - 3rd HD with Win7. HD sequence is !TB with Win7 the 2nd 250Gbwith XP on it so that there was no choice for Win7 or XP, it booted straight into Win7.

Now I don't know what's happened, but I went back and changed it back to the option in bios because I needed to use one of the programs on the old 250GB HD ... all good, I had the options back, but when I tried to get into XP, it didn't work as it did previously ... it told me I had to "activate" XP before I could use it.

Tried to activate XP and it told me there was no connectivity and to check my internet settings ... bloody difficult if I can't get into it to check ... tried to boot into safe mode with network connection ... no such bloody luck.

If anyone can tell me how to get the old 250GB HD with XP working again, I'd be extremely greatfull.

Cheers

1363610 2013-12-27 00:04:00 Hi feersumendjinn

I probably had a couple too many rum'n'cokes when I posted the OP after reading it !

It's not that I can't dual boot, I can get the choice of Win7 (C drive)or XP(E drive) - on seperate HD's - after bootup it gives the choice of logon to Win7 or Earlier version of windows i.e. XP and it was never a problem getting into either.

The problem I have now is, if I use the option to get into XP, it opens OK and I can logon OK, but as soon as I do it keeps telling me that I have to activate windows first which I can't do because it also tells me I have no internet connection ... I've tried XP in safe mode with networking and still no luck.

I'm not sure what's happened, but this problem just "appeared" on Monday and I can't figure out why or how to get XP "activated" so that I can use it again. Or whether there's a "workaround" I can use.

1363611 2013-12-27 00:11:00 See if the NIC / wireless drivers are still installed for XP. If they're not there, reinstall them Speedy Gonzales (78)
1363612 2013-12-27 00:30:00 Can't find them Speedy ... but I may be looking in the wrong place.

Can you give me a bit more info of where I should be looking ?

1363614 2013-12-27 01:25:00 I had a similar XP network problem that I could only resolve by applying the mother board drivers again. I don't know if that might help? Bryan (147)
1363615 2013-12-27 06:52:00 Device manager / network adapters

I've checked both via Device manager in Win7 ... driver for XP HD is up to date and working properly. The network adapter / driver is OK and working properly, however, I assume that only relates to C: not both HD's.

Hi Bryan .. thanks for the idea, but not sure I want to do that unless it's a last resort

1363616 2013-12-27 10:27:00 Right mouse on the network adapter in XP and select repair. See what happens. Youre not using a proxy or something in XP, are you?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1363617 2013-12-27 20:50:00 Hi Speedy ... not that I know of ... but something has changed in XP on the secondary drive that won't let me get access to XP apart from accessing it through My Computer as E Drive, therefore I'm unable to get into device manager. Going to try a couple more things before using it as a target. SP8's (9836)
