243536 2004-06-11 22:28:00 I am planning on buying a new 80 or 120 GB HDD. What brands do you pF1ers recommend? who has had good experiences with certain brands. who has had bad? Is it worth the extra money for an 8MB cache?

help much appreciated :)

243537 2004-06-11 22:32:00 IMO the 8m cache is nothing, but if the price is in your budget then why not?

Everybody has different views on certain drives based on their own experiences so you may get some conflicting advice,i've seen em die horribly many many times no matter what the brand is,

Using Seagate in systems myself, reliability seems good and the price is right.

243540 2004-06-11 22:57:00 I have 3 WD drives. 2 80's and a 40. They seem ok. To be honest I think you would be lucky to notice the difference between most brands if your an average user.

WD's do seem to be a bit noisier than some of the others tho.

243541 2004-06-11 23:06:00 Have been using Seagate for years and they are so far good - quiet, and reliable. Highly recommended

Again, it's a matter of personal preference.

243542 2004-06-12 00:11:00 the new Seagate 7200.7 are far from quiet, they can actually be quite annoying at times. Western Digital drives are slightly quieter and offer better preformance. The western Digital PATA drives with 8mb of cache are awsome preformers and have been shown to outpreform Seagate SATA drives. Maxtor seem to be expensive and dont offer the best preformance so i cant personally reckonmend them. If you want the best value for money grab a Seagate, if you want the best preformance grab a Western Digital. Pete O'Neil (250)
243543 2004-06-12 00:51:00 I'm running 3 Seagate 'Cuda's in my system and an older IBM Deskstar. No way can I hear the Seagate drives, but the IBM (Hitachi now) is "slightly" audible above the system fans. If you get new drives with fluid bearings you'd have to have your ear right next to them to hear anything, and that makes using the keyboard quite difficult.... Sb0h (3744)

243545 2004-06-12 02:54:00 Also, depending on price, it's not a silly idea to consider getting two smaller drives rather than one larger. This way the second drive can have a backup partition which is isolated from the main drive - and it'll have less usage so will be more reliable as a backup Greg S (201)
