| 243469 | 2004-06-11 05:01:00 | It's got round to that time again. HTOTW=Hot Tunes Of The Week. Real Audio Player or an alternative capable of playing real media files is required to listen to the streaming audio of the sites hosting the 1920s/30s music of a golden era of hot bands and orchestras. This time we will re-visit the British Jack Hylton Orchestra whom we last saw having a battle of the bands with Paul Whiteman, (HTOTW#15). Jack Hyltons Orchestra in the 20s and 30s was pretty well as good as most American bands, of course as an Englishman I have to say that :), but his band was the most sucessful of the British bands of the era. (I will admit though to prefering Ambrose and His Orchestra, and I'm still trying to find a site from where Ambrose can be streamed.) The Hylton Orchestra employed some of the top English musicians, of which a surprisingly large number went on to form their own orchestras in later years. Older migrants from the UK who listened to the BBC during the 40s and 50s, even 60s, when that organisation still hired/employed many orchestras will recognise some of these names, maybe older New Zealanders too: Jack Jackson (trumpet, bandleader, Jack Jacksons Record Roundup, a BBC radio program) Paul Fenoulhet (trumpet, BBC Dance Orchestra) Billy Ternent (saxaphone, BBC Orchestra) Syd Millward (sax, Syd Millward and his Nitwits) Alfredo (violin, Alfredo and His Gypsy Orchestra) Cyril Stapleton (violin, BBC Orchestra) Sid Philips (arranger, clarinet, Sid Philips' jazz band in the 40s/50s revival) The list goes on.... Jack Hylton had many vocalists , but the two mainstay stalwarts were Sam Browne and Pat O'Malley, and the trio Jack Jackson, Chappie D'Amato and Billy Ternent. (Chappie D'Amato also went on to have his own band, and when as a kid I heard his name on the radio I thought it was 'Chappie Tomato'. Although Jack Hyltons bands and orchestras were playing and recording from the very early 20s through to 1940, we will confine ourselves to 1928-1933. For those who want to read up about Jack Hylton and listen to their own pick of recordings, there is an excellent biography and hundreds of sides to choose from on Pete Faints web site (www.petefaint.co.uk), the official Jack Hylton website, from where todays selection comes from. At one time, the music files could be downloaded from the site, but now they can only be streamed. So first of all, a Fats Waller composition, his most famous that is always associated with Fats,Ain't Misbehavin' (www.petefaint.co.uk) from 1929. I particularly like this version by Jack Hylton, with vocal by Sam Browne. Also from 1929, a tune we had last week, You're The Cream In My Coffee (www.petefaint.co.uk), vocal also by Sam Browne. Going forward to 1933 and vocalist Pat O'Malley this time, You're An Old Smoothie (www.petefaint.co.uk). Another Pat O'Malley vocal, from 1931, When I Take My Sugar to Tea (www.petefaint.co.uk). (Incidently, there were a number of tunes of that time that refered to girl friends as 'sugar', with various puns associated, like the one above, and about their 'sugar' being so refined etc ). Now for a vocal trio with Jack Jackson (he was a really fine trumpeter), Billy Ternent, and Chappie D'Amato, from 1928, a really typical tune of the times, The Varsity Drag (www.petefaint.co.uk). The Varsity Drag was a dance, and that gives me an idea for the next HTOTW :) The last one for this week, is another hot number with Pat O'Malley again, Tap Your Feet (www.petefaint.co.uk). Jack Hylton also recorded lots of nonsense and novelty songs, with vocals usually by Leslie Saroni, but he also had Arthur Askey, Dickie Murdoch, Flanagan and Allen and a host more guest vocalists, as you will see if you go to Pete Faints website. Next HTOTW, we will look at some of the dances that actually created the dance band days, like the Foxtrot, the Charleston, the Shimmy, and more :) |
