They are saying: "Don't copy this". It's legitimate to put a link to an article on a site. It's not legitimate to copy the whole of a story. The absence of a copyright notice is not permision to copy. A notice is a reminder. Copyright exists regardless. It's IDG who could be in expensive trouble if a copyright owner chose to be nasty. If an article's in PC World, or another IDG magazine, it's still best to put a link to it: it's already on their disk. There's no need for another copy. Disk space isn't either free or infinite. |
