And RAID will be somewhat easier to implement as well,

Whatever drive that you opt for, a type that has been in production for a while will be less prone to "surprises". (That's why I now have two Barracudas) Give them plenty of air; more is better ;)

243547 2004-06-12 03:10:00 I have a Samsung 80 GB, which hasn't given any problems and is very quiet.

Never see anyone recommending them, or saying they are rubbish, so thought I would put in my two cents :D

243548 2004-06-12 03:18:00 There seems to be alot of people reckonmending Seagate's because they are quiet, how many of these people have used newer Seagates e.g the 7200.7? I've got two 7200.7's in RAID and they are no where near as quiet as my older 80Gb drive. Pete O'Neil (250)
243549 2004-06-12 03:42:00 always take recommendtions with a grain of salt exsepecially when recommending quiet drives. after all what do you call quiet. also a lot of the noise depends on the case and how its mounted. tweak'e (174)
243550 2004-06-12 03:46:00 And I would expect 2 drives to be more audible then one.

Although I now expect someone will have a scientific explanation where it is proved that 2 drives emitting the same audible sound will be no louder then a single drive....

243551 2004-06-12 03:52:00 lol metla....is that sort of like the old saying

If a man makes a statement in a forest with no woman around to hear him is he still wrong??

So if 2 men are in the forest and make the same statement with no women around to hear them are they BOTH wrong?? or does 2 wrongs make a right? or does 4 rights make a full circle??

243552 2004-06-12 03:58:00 I recently bought a Western Digital SE 160Gb with 8mb cache, and you can definitely hear it grumbling away in the background just like my old 20Gb drive did which was 3x louder.

With my Seagate 120Gb 7200.7 with 8mb cache you cannot hear it at all. I can even put my ear up to the case (which has an open grill at the front for a fan) and I can't hear it. Well maybe just slightly, but its not louder than my Enermax PSU.

All hard drives these days seem good value for money. Get an 8mb cache one, the price difference is negligible they do make a difference especially with an Operating System and programs on it. You should be prepared to pay $200-$250 for a good one. If you haven't got that money, save a little longer.

243553 2004-06-12 04:02:00 :^O :^O Dipstick.

Anyway here is a good article (www.anandtech.com) to have a read of. They compare all the latest drives for performance and noise.

243554 2004-06-12 09:39:00 Don't know about the others but (some?) Western Digital hard drives dropped a bit in price earlier this week. ;-) Susan B (19)
