244410 2004-06-14 09:30:00 I have today downloaded the AVG free edition and have found I have a problem that I cannot fix. I have been a user of AVG for years .. its the best thing online!!

Oddly though this appears to be part of another problem .. I have a game on my computer that has recently been playing up in that when I click on it to play it it comes up and then disappears.

Today I discovered that my AVG wasnt operating and attempted to get it to work but it just comes up and immediately goes away again .. so I tried to uninstall it using the uninstall and also the add remove program .. in neither case would it work. Then I thought OK .. download it again .. and put it over the top of the other one .. same problem .. : (

In fact as I have been typing this 3 icons for AVG came up in the systems tray and as I moved the cursor over each of them they disappeared.

?????????????????????????? :D

244411 2004-06-14 10:19:00 Sounds fishy to me . Can you get to Trendmicro House Call (http://housecall . trendmicro . com/) for an online virus scan?

If that will not load or will not scan then you have probably got a trojan that disables all your defensive virus/spyware, etc programs .

Let us know how you get on .

This morning I attempted it again only to find *error code 7* coming up . I turned off comp and on again and attempted it again . . . same error code . . Ive looked at the FAQ in trend . . tried to manually download the lastest pattern files but I get http not found . .

Ive tried again to uninstall AVG . . but thats still not working :(

244415 2004-06-15 01:15:00 I can't see what version of Windows you have . . . .

Anyway, do a search for Hosts ensuring that "Look in" is set to "Local Hard Drives" or to (C: ) .

You may need to also do the following, depending on what version of Windows you have:

Click "More advanced options . "
Check "Search system folders . "
Check "Search subfolders . "
Click Search .
Click Find Now or Search Now .

For each Hosts file that you find, right-click the file, and then click "Open With . "

Deselect the "Always use this program to open this program" check box .

Scroll through the list of programs and double-click Notepad .

When the file opens, delete all the entries in the Hosts file except for the following line:

127 . 0 . 0 . 1 localhost

After you have done this try the Trend anti-virus scan again .

Also, download HijackThis ( . spychecker . com/download/download_hijackthis . html" target="_blank">www . spychecker . com), make a new folder within Program Files called HijackThis, put your downloaded file in that folder, double-click on it and click Scan . When it has done the scan click on Save Log and post the results of that log here .

244418 2004-06-15 02:02:00 Further to that ..

the next file is a CAB file .. and doesnt give an option to open .. simply extract and open the file .. the next has that 127.0.0.1 .. then a range of files under that .. containing symantec mcafee sophos etc .. do I delete all those leaving the 127.0.0.1 local host ?????

As Susan suggested its better to follow one persons lead to get the desired result, She won't lead you astray.

Personally I would have approached the entire problem from a different angle.
