244263 2004-06-14 03:48:00 I hope to build a small box to act as a router/firewall and want to use linux..

the box is a k6II 300Mhz with 64Mb ram
it will need to run mysql and perl and apache.
I want to run my web site off it.

the problem is that i need a distro that is a small download as i am on dialup. 1 CD is cool 2 CD is not so cool 3 CD is not going to happen.

can anyone recomend a distro??

could a hack my current knoppix is work off the Harddrive and then put in the other programs i need??

244264 2004-06-14 03:51:00 im sure someone could mail you a version,I have a couple but have no idea if they are suited to the task.

But sending a copy down the line to welly won't be an issue.

244266 2004-06-14 04:05:00 If you want to run your website off it, then I'll recommend Ark Linux (A good distro for home users), and Vector Linux (Not so much aimed at n00b's, but a lot quicker).

Ark linux is 3-4 CD's (Install CD, Extra Programs CD, Server Software CD and Development Tols CD) and has apache for you to run your website, however it wont be quite as fast as Vector would but I'll recommend you use it anyways because its so easy to setup.

You could get away with downloading CD 1 and 3 (CD 3 is Server Software and is only 85 MB).

Either that or Vector Linux is around 400MB, but not quite so n00b friendly.

Email me (My Email addy is in my Profile) if you'd rather not Download them, I can send you a copy if you like.

Cheers

244267 2004-06-14 04:06:00 Actually.. Metla's slightly closer to you, and I sent him Ark Linux so it may pay to get in contact with him if you want a copy of it, as postage wont be 3-4 days from Aucks :-)

244268 2004-06-14 04:10:00 I have it too CHill. Some git posted me the 4 CD set. I was thinking of a couple 1 or 2 CD distro that Derek could check out as well. Easy enough to burn and he could pick up or post is no difficulty.

244270 2004-06-14 04:32:00 i am a bit new to the linux world but have worked a bit with unix so i am not a total noob

the system only has a 2GB drive and i dont want to run any x-windows system.
real men run from the command line :-)
if i dont use X it will save on disk and on CPU speed.

the bit point is that i want to use this box to run my web page from.

i am happy to pay a few doller to cover copying and posting.

for now i will sit back and see what other distros are put up for the job.

244271 2004-06-14 04:43:00 Go with Slackware then :-) I have slackware 9.1 on two CD's and it should do all you want, without all the excess "X" software :-)

Im a bit worried Vector may not have everything you're after, that's my only gripe about it, but Slackware should!

How could you go past the very capable Mandrake 9.2. If you pop along to your local Dick Smith store they should have a 4 cd set of Mandrake 9.2 (3 cd's for Mandrake and one Mandrake Move cd (live cd)) for $8. If you leave now, your have a running box in a few hours :)
